This document contains the basic control strategy, minimum functionality requirements, basic driver interface elements, minimum requirements for diagnostics and reaction to failure, and performance test procedures for Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems. ACC systems are realised as either Full Speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control (FSRA) systems or Limited Speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control (LSRA) systems. LSRA systems are further distinguished into two types, requiring manual or automatic clutch. Adaptive Cruise Control is fundamentally intended to provide longitudinal control of equipped vehicles while travelling on highways (roads where non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians are prohibited) under free-flowing and for FSRA-type systems also for congested traffic conditions. ACC can be augmented with other capabilities, such as forward obstacle warning. For FSRA-type systems the system will attempt to stop behind an already tracked vehicle within its limited deceleration capabilities and will be able to start again after the driver has input a request to the system to resume the journey from standstill. The system is not required to react to stationary or slow moving objects
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15622:2018 - Intelligent transport systems - Adaptive cruise control systems - Performance requirements and test procedures - defines system-level performance requirements and test methods for Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). It sets the basic control strategy, minimum functionality, driver interface elements, diagnostics and failure reactions, and performance test procedures for ACC systems implemented as Full Speed Range ACC (FSRA) or Limited Speed Range ACC (LSRA). The standard is scoped to longitudinal control on highways (roads excluding pedestrians and non‑motorized traffic) and supports free‑flow and, for FSRA, congested traffic including stop/hold/resume behavior.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Control strategy and system states: Defines ACC states (off, stand-by, active, speed control, following, FSRA hold) and the generic ACC control loop using distance, host‑vehicle motion and driver inputs.
- Minimum functionality: Requirements for set speed, time‑gap based following, target acquisition and following capability; FSRA specifics include limited automatic stop and driver-initiated resume.
- Driver interface: Basic operation elements, displays, symbols and required driver intervention mechanisms consistent with ISO symbol guidance.
- Diagnostics and failure reactions: Minimum requirements for detecting faults and safe fallback behaviors (e.g., handing control back to the driver, brake light activation).
- Performance test procedures: Methods and conditions for evaluating ACC performance, including environmental conditions, test target specification (RADAR, infrared LIDAR considerations), and tests such as target acquisition range, target discrimination, curve capability and automatic “stop” capability for FSRA.
- Sensor and test guidance: Normative test descriptions reference common sensor types (millimetre‑wave RADAR, infrared LIDAR) but do not mandate specific sensor implementations.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 15622:2018 is used by:
- Automotive OEMs and system integrators designing or validating ACC features.
- Tier‑1 suppliers of ADAS controllers, radar and LIDAR subsystems to ensure system‑level compliance.
- Test laboratories and homologation bodies conducting performance evaluations and type‑approval testing.
- Regulators and standards writers referencing established performance benchmarks for longitudinal automation.
- OEM safety and validation teams integrating driver interface, diagnostics and failure‑mode requirements into vehicle designs.
Practical applications include designing ACC features for highways, validating FSRA stop/hold/resume behavior, developing driver displays and fail‑safe responses, and executing standardized test campaigns to demonstrate compliance.
