ISO 15745-2:2003 defines the technology specific elements and rules for describing both communication network profiles and the communication related aspects of device profiles specific to ISO 11898-based control systems. In particular, ISO 15745-2:2003 describes technology specific profile templates for the device profile and the communication network profile. ISO 15745-2:2003 is to be used in conjunction with ISO 15745-1:2003 to describe an application integration framework. Generic elements and rules for describing integration models and application interoperability profiles, together with their component profiles (process profiles, information exchange profiles, and resource profiles) are specified in ISO 15745-1:2003.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15745-2:2003 is Part 2 of the ISO 15745 series that extends the generic Open Systems Application Integration Framework (AIF) to ISO 11898-based control systems (CAN-based technologies such as DeviceNet and CANopen). It defines the technology-specific elements, XML profile templates and rules used to describe both communication network profiles and the communication-related aspects of device profiles. ISO 15745-2:2003 is intended to be used together with ISO 15745-1:2003 to create application interoperability profiles (AIPs) and resource profiles for industrial automation integration.
Key Topics
- Profile templates and syntax
- XML Schema–based templates for device and communication network profiles (W3C XML and XML Schema standards are referenced).
- Support for legacy ASCII formats and "wrapper" templates to encapsulate Electronic Data Sheets (EDS) for backward compatibility.
- Device and communication network profiles
- Structured templates to describe device identity, accessible device data, communication capabilities, and vendor-specific information.
- Profiles include a standardized header (e.g., ProfileTechnology attribute) to identify technology names such as DeviceNet, CANopen, CIP, EDS, COFDCML.
- Technology-specific content
- Annex A: DeviceNet profile templates, EDS requirements and XML encapsulation options.
- Annex B: CANopen profile templates, object descriptions (e.g., DeviceManager) and XML schema definitions.
- Integration with AIF
- Rules to ensure profiles include required Industrial Automation System (IAS) interfaces and can be embedded into AIP/resource profile XML instances as specified in ISO 15745-1.
Applications
ISO 15745-2:2003 is practical for:
- Systems integrators who must document and specify device/network interfaces for CAN-based control solutions.
- Device manufacturers producing DeviceNet or CANopen devices and EDS files who need standardized profile templates for interoperability.
- Control engineers and automation architects designing AIPs, resource profiles or integration models to ensure consistent integration of field devices on CAN (ISO 11898) networks.
- Software vendors building engineering tools, configuration utilities or asset management systems that consume XML-based device and network profiles.
Practical benefits include improved interoperability, consistent device/network documentation, easier selection of compatible resources, and smoother system commissioning and maintenance.
