The purpose of ISO 15863:2003 is to provide spacecraft (SC) and launch vehicle (LV) organizations with the general format for presenting the interface control document (ICD) that verifies and controls the compatibility between SC and LV for a dedicated mission. ISO 15863:2003 addresses the definition of the mission, the compatibility of the SC with the LV environment, including all mechanical, electrical, radio frequency, and electromagnetic aspects related to SC to LV and SC to launch range interfaces, verification analyses and tests for the induced environment, and the necessary facilities and support for launch range operations.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15863:2003 - Space systems - Spacecraft-to-launch-vehicle interface control document (ICD) - defines a standard format and content for ICDs used to verify and control compatibility between a spacecraft (SC) and a launch vehicle (LV) for a dedicated mission. The standard covers mission definition, mechanical, electrical, RF and electromagnetic interfaces, verification analyses and tests for induced environments, and required facilities and support for launch range operations. ISO 15863 helps reduce late-stage interface incompatibilities and supports consistent contractual documentation between SC and LV organizations.
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 15863 organizes the ICD content into clear technical areas. Major topics include:
-
Mission and spacecraft description
- Mission purpose, orbit, coverage and general SC bus/payload characteristics.
-
Mechanical interfaces
- LV/SC reference axes, usable volume (clearances), fundamental frequencies, adapter/interface ring properties (material, stiffness, coating, flatness), mating and separation systems (clampbands, pyrotechnic bolts), connector and purge locations, and access openings for encapsulated payloads.
-
Electrical interfaces
- Umbilical wiring diagrams, connector specifications (supplier, part number, pinout, shielding), pin-by-pin umbilical link definitions (function, voltage, current, wire type), power-supply characteristics for pre-launch or flight, in-flight telemetry channels, and separation-status signals.
-
Command interfaces
- Definitions for pyrotechnic commands, dry-loop commands and other LV-generated electrical commands, including redundancy, timing, voltages/currents, grounding and circuit-protection constraints.
-
RF and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
- RF interface characterisation, EIRP considerations, and EMC constraints to protect both SC and LV systems.
-
Verification and testing
- Analyses and tests for the induced environment, end-to-end electrical and isolation testing, shock/spectrum verification for separation, and test planning.
-
Launch range operations
- Required facilities, support equipment, safety submission sheets, waivers, and applicable documents.
Applications - who uses ISO 15863
ISO 15863 is intended for:
- Spacecraft manufacturers and systems engineers preparing ICDs
- Launch vehicle agencies and integrators defining LV-side interface requirements
- Payload adapter designers and test teams planning mechanical and electrical verification
- Launch range operators and safety officers coordinating facilities, procedures and waiver lists
- Procurement and contract teams using the ICD as part of contractual deliverables
Practical uses include standardizing ICD content, reducing integration risks, guiding test programs, and clarifying responsibilities for adapter hardware and umbilical interfaces.
