ISO 15875-2:2003 specifies the characteristics of pipes made from crosslinked polyethylene (PE-X) for piping systems intended to be used for hot and cold water installations, within buildings, for the conveyance of water which may or may not be intended for human consumption (domestic systems) or for heating systems, under operating pressures and temperatures appropriate to the class of application. It covers a range of service conditions (application classes), design pressures and pipe dimension classes. It does not apply if the values of the design temperature, maximum design temperature and malfunction temperature are in excess of those given in ISO 15875-1. It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods referred to in the standard. In conjunction with the other parts of ISO 15875, it is applicable to PE-X pipes and their joints, including joints with other PE-X components and components made of other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for hot and cold water installations. It is applicable to pipes with or without (a) barrier layer(s).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15875-2:2003 specifies the requirements for pipes made from crosslinked polyethylene (PE‑X) used in piping systems for hot and cold water installations within buildings. It defines material, geometrical, mechanical, physical and performance requirements, and the test parameters needed to verify long‑term hydrostatic strength and other properties. The standard applies to domestic water and heating systems under the design pressures and temperatures defined by ISO 15875‑1 and covers pipes with or without barrier layers and their joints with other PE‑X, plastic and non‑plastic components.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Material requirements: Pipe material must be polyethylene that has been crosslinked (peroxide, silane, electron beam or azo processes) producing a 3‑dimensional network; degree of crosslinking is assessed (see EN 579).
- Long‑term strength (sLCL / s‑values): Evaluation is carried out in accordance with EN ISO 9080 and EN 921. Test data are compared to reference curves; conformance is demonstrated by plotting failure times and hoop stresses (a high proportion of results must lie on or above the reference line).
- Geometrical characteristics: Dimensions and tolerances are measured per EN ISO 3126; calculated pipe design value S (Scalc, max) must meet the values for the applicable application class and design pressure.
- General characteristics: Surface finish, end squareness and opacity requirements (opaque PE‑X pipes declared as such shall transmit ≤ 0.2% visible light per EN 578).
- Test methods and marking: The standard specifies the test parameters for referenced methods and the minimum marking requirements for traceability and conformity.
Applications
ISO 15875‑2 is intended for:
- Domestic potable water systems (pipes conveying water that may or may not be for human consumption)
- Building heating systems (radiator and underfloor heating circuits)
- Installation scenarios where PE‑X pipes are joined to other PE‑X or compatible plastic/non‑plastic fittings
- Systems where barrier layers are used to control oxygen diffusion or light transmission
Practical benefits include predictable long‑term performance, compatibility guidance for joints, and a test framework for product certification and specification.
