This part of ISO 15930 specifies the methods for the use of the Portable Document Format (PDF) for the dissemination of compound CMYK digital data, in a single exchange, that is complete and ready for final print reproduction.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15930-1:2001 specifies how to use the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) for a “complete exchange” of CMYK prepress data intended for final print reproduction. Commonly referred to as PDF/X-1 (and the more restrictive PDF/X-1a), this part of ISO 15930 defines a constrained use of PDF 1.3 so a single file can be transferred as a ready-to-print compound entity - a platform- and transport-independent “blind exchange” that contains all content required for predictable print output.
Key Topics
- Complete CMYK exchange: The file must include all text, graphics, images and resources needed for final printing so no additional assets or prior technical agreements are required.
- Conformance levels: Two levels are defined:
- PDF/X-1 (allows OPI references and encryption)
- PDF/X-1a (disallows OPI references and encryption)
- Based on PDF 1.3: Restrictions and allowed PDF objects are specified to remove ambiguity and ensure interoperability.
- Color and printing intent: Supports documentation of characterized printing conditions and OutputIntent objects (Annex C gives minimal requirements) to aid predictable color reproduction in CMYK workflows.
- Normative references: Integrates existing standards such as ICC color profile format, ISO 12639 (TIFF/IT), and Adobe PDF/PostScript specifications.
- Annex guidance: Informative annexes cover PDF features, OPI/external references, OutputIntent clarifications and other implementation notes.
Applications
ISO 15930-1 is intended for industries and workflows that require reliable, single-file delivery of print-ready CMYK content:
- Commercial printers and prepress houses - ensures files are ready for final plate/press production without additional asset requests.
- Graphic designers and agencies - produces exchangeable, print-ready PDFs that minimize rework.
- Software vendors - developers of PDF/X-compliant writers, readers and preflight tools implement and validate conformance.
- Archiving and distribution - standardizes long-term storage of print-ready materials to preserve print intent.
Benefits include reduced ambiguity in file interpretation, fewer production delays, and more predictable color and press results for CMYK workflows.
