This document specifies the interface dimensions for interchangeability and specifies the performance requirements for hydraulic quick-action couplings, flush-face type, for use at pressures of 10 MPa (100 bar) to 31,5 MPa (315 bar), depending upon the coupling size. Couplings in accordance with this document are not designed to connect or disconnect under pressure. Couplings in accordance with this document provide for automatic sealing of the fluid pressure on the upstream side and on the downstream side when the coupling is disconnected.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16028:2023, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), defines the dimensions and performance requirements of hydraulic quick-action couplings, flush-face type. These couplings are used in hydraulic fluid power systems to connect and disconnect fluid lines quickly without tools, ensuring safe and efficient operation. This standard covers couplings designed for pressures ranging from 10 MPa (100 bar) up to 31.5 MPa (315 bar) depending on the coupling size.
Key features of couplings conforming to ISO 16028:2023 include:
- Automatic sealing of fluid pressure on both upstream and downstream sides upon disconnection.
- Couplings are not intended to connect or disconnect under pressure.
- Uniform interface dimensions to ensure interchangeability between manufacturers.
- Defined performance criteria verified through rigorous testing.
This second edition updates previous versions by expanding coupling size ranges, refining dimensional tolerances, and enhancing performance benchmarks.
Key Topics
-
Dimensional Requirements: Precise interface dimensions for flush-face quick-action couplings ensure compatibility. Sizes correspond to nominal hose inside diameters, with detailed measurements provided for sizes 6.3 through 51 mm.
-
Performance Requirements: Couplings must meet standards for:
- Rated working pressures and minimum burst pressures.
- Pressure impulse endurance - 1,000,000 cycles coupled and 100,000 cycles uncoupled.
- Maximum pressure drop at rated flow.
- Fluid loss per disconnection (minimized to prevent contamination and spillage).
- Flow rate surge capacity, tested under long and short duration conditions.
-
Testing Standards: Verification procedures use referenced ISO standards:
-
Marking and Identification: Couplings must be permanently marked with the manufacturer’s name, logo, or product ID. The official conformity statement “Dimensional and performance requirements in accordance with ISO 16028:2023” is recommended for documentation and commercial use.
Applications
ISO 16028:2023 compliant quick-action couplings are essential components in various hydraulic systems requiring fast and secure fluid line connections without leakage or contamination. Typical applications include:
- Mobile hydraulic equipment such as construction machinery, agricultural tractors, and forestry vehicles.
- Industrial hydraulic systems in manufacturing plants where tool-free hose coupling improves maintenance efficiency.
- Test rigs and hydraulic testing equipment requiring frequent connection/disconnection cycles.
- Fluid power systems in transportation, including heavy trucks and buses, to ensure safe hydraulic circuit handling.
- Environments where contaminant ingress prevention through reliable flush-face coupling design is critical.
The standard ensures users and manufacturers have a common framework to guarantee coupling safety, interchangeability, and performance reliability across diverse industries.
