ISO 16282:2007 specifies a method intended primarily for the determination of the abrasion resistance of shaped refractory materials at ambient temperature. It can also be used for unshaped refractory materials. It provides an indication of the suitability of the material for service in abrasive or erosive conditions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16282:2007 specifies a standardized test method for determining resistance to abrasion of dense shaped refractory products at ambient temperature. Primarily intended for shaped refractories (and applicable to unshaped materials), the method gives a reproducible indication of a material’s suitability for service under abrasive or erosive conditions by measuring the volume of material removed when blasted with a size-graded abrasive.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: measure volume loss from a flat test surface after blasting with 1 000 g of silicon carbide abrasive propelled by compressed air.
- Abrasive: silicon carbide with sieve distribution specified (corresponds to FEPA P36); remove material retained on 850 µm sieve and passing 300 µm sieve.
- Apparatus:
- Venturi blast assembly or blast gun with specified air-delivery nozzle dimensions (inlet 2.84–2.92 mm; outlet 2.36–2.44 mm).
- Glass nozzle tube (115 mm long) inserted through a steel sleeve; a new glass tube for each determination.
- Sealed test chamber with exhaust and manometer; blast distance (203 ± 1) mm from nozzle tip to test surface.
- Feed mechanism delivering (1 000 ± 5) g abrasive in (450 ± 15) s.
- Operating conditions:
- Compressed air pressure to blast assembly (450 ± 7) kPa.
- Test chamber pressure controlled to 310 Pa (32 mm water).
- Vacuum check at abrasive entry port: minimum 375 mmHg indicated on vacuum gauge.
- Test pieces:
- Typical shaped specimens: 114 × 114 × 64 mm (or 100 × 100 × 25 mm for very abrasion-resistant materials).
- Dry at (110 ± 5) °C to constant mass before testing.
- Calculation:
- Determine bulk density (ISO 5017 or via mass/volume) and compute volume loss A = mass loss / bulk density.
- Reporting: comprehensive test report requirements (sample ID, dimensions, preparation, individual results and mean, deviations, anomalies, date).
Applications and users
ISO 16282:2007 is used to:
- Compare abrasion resistance of refractory bricks, shapes and unshaped refractories.
- Support material selection and quality control for linings exposed to mechanical wear.
- Provide test data for specifications, procurement and R&D.
Typical users include refractory manufacturers, materials laboratories, quality assurance engineers, R&D teams, and procurement/specification writers in industries where abrasive wear is a concern (e.g., high-temperature process linings).
