ISO 16293-5:2016 specifies dimensional and minimum quality requirements (in respect of visual and pattern faults) for patterned glass, as defined in ISO 16293‑1, for use in building. ISO 16293-5:2016 applies only to patterned glass supplied in rectangular panes, in stock sizes and in final cut sizes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16293-5:2016 - "Glass in building - Basic soda lime silicate glass products - Part 5: Patterned glass" specifies dimensional and minimum quality requirements for patterned soda‑lime silicate glass used in buildings. The standard applies to patterned glass supplied as rectangular panes in stock sizes and final cut sizes, and covers how to measure thickness, length/width/squareness, visual and pattern faults, and acceptable edge defects.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies only to rectangular patterned glass panes (stock and final cut sizes) intended for building use.
- Dimensional requirements
- Thickness measured as the average of four plate‑gauge readings (50 mm ± 5 mm diameter). Tolerances are defined by nominal thickness (e.g., ±0.5 mm for many common thicknesses; larger tolerances for thicker panes).
- Length, width and squareness tolerances depend on thickness and pane size; separate tables specify limits for stock and final cut sizes.
- Quality requirements - visual faults
- Defines spot faults, linear/extended faults, and pattern faults (out of square, waviness, bow).
- Inspection method: pane illuminated under diffuse daylight, viewed against a matt grey screen; pane placed vertically ~3 m in front of the screen, observer 1.5 m from the glass with normal incidence.
- Acceptance criteria for spot and linear faults are given (different limits for stock vs final cut sizes); for final cut sizes linear/extended faults are not permitted when inspected per the method.
- Pattern deviations: numerical limits for out‑of‑square, waviness and bow (e.g., up to 12 mm per metre for out‑of‑square; waviness and bow limits also specified).
- Edge defects for final cut sizes
- Limits on entrant/emergent faults and bevels are specified relative to glass thickness; special caveat for thermal stress-sensitive applications.
Applications
- Use ISO 16293-5:2016 to:
- Define procurement and acceptance criteria for patterned glass in façades, partitions, doors, and interior glazing.
- Create clear inspection procedures and QA checklists for manufacturers and installers.
- Specify tolerances and allowable visual defects in contracts, product datasheets and quality control documentation.
Who should use this standard
- Glass manufacturers and pattern‑rollers
- Architectural and façade specifiers
- Glazing contractors and installers
- Quality inspectors, testing labs and building compliance authorities
