ISO16431:2012 defines methods to measure the cleanliness of a fluid in an assembled hydraulic fluid power system, to verify a required system cleanliness upon release of the system from the production area, and if needed, to clean the system to the required cleanliness level. The clean-up procedure specified in ISO16431:2012 is not intended to replace proper system flushing procedures; see ISO 23309 for a system flushing procedure. Components and parts used in such systems should be clean prior to assembly; see ISO 18413 for guidance.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16431:2012 - Hydraulic fluid power - System clean-up procedures and verification of cleanliness of assembled systems - defines procedures to measure, verify, and where necessary clean the fluid cleanliness of assembled hydraulic systems before release from production. The standard specifies sampling and particle-counting methods, use of temporary clean-up or auxiliary filter systems, and reporting requirements. It is intended to supplement good contamination-control practices and is not a substitute for full system flushing (see ISO 23309) or pre‑assembly component cleanliness guidance (see ISO 18413).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Purpose: Verify that the assembled hydraulic system meets the agreed required cleanliness level (RCL) before leaving production.
- Measurement methods: Off-line bottle sampling (ISO 4021, ISO 3722) and particle analysis using automatic particle counters (ISO 11500), optical microscopy (ISO 4407) or monitoring (ISO 21018‑1).
- Test equipment: Fluid line sampler, qualified sample containers, particle counting/monitoring equipment, and clean-up or auxiliary filtration and circulation means.
- Clean-up procedure (high level):
- Install fluid line sampler (preferably upstream of the system filter).
- Circulate fluid through all circuits and exercise components.
- Obtain sample and perform particle count / on-line monitoring.
- If cleanliness does not meet the RCL, select and install a clean-up filter or auxiliary filter system; bypass components if required.
- Circulate until target cleanliness is achieved; retest and repeat as needed.
- Remove temporary connections and report results.
- Acceptance criteria: System accepted when measured cleanliness is equal to or cleaner than the RCL agreed between supplier and purchaser (reported per ISO 4406 coding).
- Reporting: Test report must record date, system ID, measured cleanliness, sampling method, bypassed components, operating conditions (temperature, pressure, fluid type/viscosity), and analysis method/mode.
Applications and users
ISO 16431:2012 is practical for:
- Hydraulic system manufacturers and OEMs verifying cleanliness at final assembly.
- Quality, production and contamination‑control engineers setting release criteria.
- Maintenance teams and service providers performing refurbishment or reassembly.
- Test laboratories performing particle contamination analyses and issuing compliance reports.
Using ISO 16431 supports improved system reliability, reduced wear and failure rates, and documented conformity to buyer/supplier cleanliness requirements.
