This standard provides a comprehensive set of procedures for verifying the correct implementation of each capability claimed on a BACnet PICS including: (a) support of each claimed BACnet service, either as an initiator, executor, or both, (b) support of each claimed BACnet object-type, including both required properties and each claimed optional property, (c) support of the BACnet network layer protocol, (d) support of each claimed data link option, and (e) support of all claimed special functionality.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 16484-6:2024 (BACS) Data communication conformance testing
ISO 16484-6:2024 defines formal procedures and test requirements for data communication conformance testing of Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS) that implement the BACnet protocol. The standard specifies how to verify each capability claimed on a BACnet PICS (Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement), including services, object-types and properties, network-layer behaviour, data link options, and any claimed special functionality. It also defines an electronic PICS (EPICS) file format and consistency checks used during automated conformance testing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- PICS/EPICS verification
- Electronic PICS file format: character encoding, structure, parameter notation and sections.
- EPICS consistency tests to ensure the declared capabilities match testable behavior.
- Conformance test specification
- Conventions for specifying tests (TCSL components and statements, time dependencies, references).
- Test execution considerations and test data (TD) requirements.
- Object and property tests
- Read/write support checks for required and optional object properties.
- Object functionality tests to confirm correct object behaviour.
- Application service tests
- Extensive initiation and execution tests for BACnet application services (e.g., ReadProperty, WriteProperty, event/notification, COV, file transfer, device control and others).
- Coverage of both confirmed and unconfirmed service behaviors.
- Network layer and data link tests
- Network-layer protocol tests, router and half‑router functionality, route binding and virtual routing.
- Data link option tests including B/IP PAD and other link-specific behaviour.
- Special functionality
- Verification of any additional claims made in the PICS, including proprietary or advanced features.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
- Device manufacturers: for self-testing and to prepare devices for third‑party certification, ensuring claimed BACnet features are implemented correctly.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies: to run standardized conformance test suites and produce repeatable, auditable conformance results.
- System integrators and specifiers: to validate vendor claims during procurement and installation, reducing interoperability risk.
- Building owners and facility managers: to require proven conformance in procurement language and ensure long-term interoperability.
