ISO 16525-8:2014 specifies test methods for confirming the occurrence of electrochemical migration in electrically isotropic conductive adhesives at high-temperature and humidity. The electrical resistance is also determined.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16525-8:2014 specifies standardized test methods for electrochemical migration in isotropic electrically conductive adhesives. The standard defines how to prepare comb-pattern test coupons, apply a DC bias under elevated temperature and humidity, measure insulation resistance and leakage, and inspect for electrochemical-migration failures (dendritic growth, electrode dissolution and shorting). It also sets requirements for test equipment and the information to record in a test report.
Key topics and requirements
- Test principle: Screen-print a conductive adhesive in a comb-pattern on a PCB substrate, expose the coupon to high temperature and humidity while applying a DC bias, and monitor insulation resistance and leakage current to detect electrochemical migration. Final microscopic inspection confirms physical migration.
- Test specimen: Glass fabric-based epoxy resin copper-clad laminate (substrate thickness ~1.6 ± 0.2 mm) with specified comb-pattern electrodes and stencil mask.
- Apparatus: High-resistance meter (measuring-voltage range 10–100 V), DC power supply (10–100 V), humidity chamber with forced-air circulation, and microscope (50x–250x, ~2000 lx).
- Test conditions: Standardized high-temperature/high-humidity profile consistent with IEC/ISO environmental methods (bias voltage and measuring voltage applied during exposure; typical durations up to 1000 h as defined in the standard).
- Acceptance / judgment: Time to failure is recorded when insulation resistance falls to 10 MΩ or lower (unless otherwise specified). Visual and microscopic evidence of conductive migration are reported.
- Test report content: Adhesive brand/lot, resin/filler data, coupon and comb-pattern dimensions, application and cure parameters, equipment models, test conditions, insulation resistance results, presence/absence of migration, and laboratory details.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 16525-8:2014 is intended for:
- Adhesive manufacturers verifying the electrical reliability of isotropic conductive adhesive formulations.
- Electronics reliability and failure-analysis engineers assessing risk of electrochemical migration in assembled circuits.
- PCB/material suppliers and contract test laboratories performing standardized qualification and comparative testing.
- Quality assurance teams establishing product specifications and acceptance criteria for adhesives used in high-humidity / high-temperature environments.
Practical use cases include qualifying adhesives for consumer electronics, automotive electronics, and industrial modules where moisture-driven migration can cause intermittent or permanent electrical failures.
