ISO 16526-1:2011 specifies a method for the direct and absolute measurement of the average high voltage of constant potential (DC) X-ray systems on the secondary side of the high voltage generator. The intention is to check the correspondence with the indicated high voltage value on the control unit of the X-ray system. This method is applied to assure a reproducible operation of X-ray systems because the voltage influences particularly the penetration of materials and the contrast of X-ray images and also the requirements concerning the radiation protection.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 16526-1:2011 (Voltage divider method)
ISO 16526-1:2011 is an international standard for non-destructive testing (NDT) that specifies the voltage divider method for the direct and absolute measurement of the average high voltage (DC) on the secondary side of constant-potential X‑ray generators. Its primary purpose is to verify that the actual X‑ray tube voltage corresponds to the value indicated by the X‑ray system control unit - a key factor affecting material penetration, image contrast and radiation protection.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: Use of a high-voltage resistor chain (voltage divider) between the generator and X‑ray tube, with an analog output taken across a lower resistor to measure the scaled-down voltage.
- Measurement setup: Measuring device (e.g., voltmeter or oscilloscope) connected between the high-voltage generator and the X‑ray tube; the input resistance of the measuring instrument must be taken into account.
- Resistor design:
- Divider resistances chosen so divider current is < 10% of the actual tube current.
- Resistor chain temperature stability: temperature coefficient ≤ 50 × 10^-6 /°C (as specified in the standard).
- Accuracy targets:
- Example precisions given: 1% of maximum voltage for highly stabilized systems (tomography, dosimetry), or 3% for general radiography/radioscopy.
- Reporting requirements: Test report must include system identification (type/serial number), working conditions (tube current, tube voltage, temperature), measuring-device accuracy, date, results compared with indicated values, and operator name/signature.
Practical applications and users
Who uses ISO 16526-1:
- NDT technicians and radiographers performing quality assurance on industrial X‑ray systems
- Calibration laboratories verifying X‑ray generator high-voltage accuracy
