ISO 16583 specifies dimensional and mechanical characteristics and application data for open end blind rivets with break pull mandrel and countersunk head, with a copper body (Cu) and either a steel (St) or a bronze (Br) or a stainless steel (SSt) mandrel and with nominal diameters from 3 mm up to and including 4,8 mm.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16583:2002 defines dimensional, mechanical and application data for open end blind rivets with a break‑pull mandrel and countersunk head. It covers rivets with a copper (Cu) body and mandrels of steel (St), bronze (Br) or stainless steel (SSt), with nominal diameters from 3 mm to 4.8 mm. The standard sets sizes, material/finish guidance, mechanical performance limits and acceptance/testing references for reliable one‑side fastening.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and sizes: Nominal diameters covered are 3, 3.2, 4 and 4.8 mm; rivet lengths and recommended grip ranges are provided in the standard (see Table 1).
- Materials & finishes:
- Rivet body: copper, plain (natural) finish.
- Mandrel: steel (surface treatment at manufacturer’s discretion, e.g. phosphate/oil or zinc), bronze and stainless steel mandrels plain.
- Dimensional rules / design formulae (Annex A):
- Shank diameter: d_max = d_nom + 0.08 mm, d_min = d_nom − 0.15 mm.
- Head diameter: d_k_max = 2.1 × d_nom (rounded).
- Head height: k_max = 0.415 × d_nom.
- Clearance hole: h1_max = d_nom + 0.2 mm, h1_min = d_nom + 0.1 mm.
- Mechanical properties (tested per ISO 14589):
- Minimum shear loads (N): 3 mm → 760; 3.2 mm → 800; 4 mm → 1 500; 4.8 mm → 2 000.
- Minimum tensile loads (N): 3 mm → 950; 3.2 mm → 1 000; 4 mm → 1 800; 4.8 mm → 2 500.
- Maximum mandrel break loads (N): 3 / 3.2 mm → 3 000; 4 mm → 4 500; 4.8 mm → 5 000.
- Additional performance:
- Mandrel push‑out resistance must exceed 10 N.
- Mandrel head retention test loads (N): 3/3.2 mm → 15; 4 mm → 20; 4.8 mm → 25.
- Workmanship & acceptance: Rivets must be free of burrs and defects; no cracking at 5× magnification after setting. Acceptance inspection follows ISO 3269 unless otherwise agreed.
- Designation example: Blind rivet ISO 16583 - 4 ×××× 12 - Cu/St (for a 4 mm × 12 mm Cu body / steel mandrel rivet).
Applications and users
- Practical uses: one‑side fastening where a countersunk head is required (flush finish) - e.g., electronics enclosures, HVAC panels, automotive trim, light structural assemblies and general sheet‑metal work.
- Who uses it:
- Fastener manufacturers and tool suppliers (design, production, quality control).
- Mechanical and product design engineers specifying fasteners.
- Procurement and standards compliance teams.
- Test and inspection laboratories performing acceptance testing.
