ISO 16586:2003 specifies a method for the gravimetric determination of soil water content as a volume fraction on the basis of the ratio of measured water content mass to known dry bulk density. ISO 16586:2003 is applicable to all types of non-swelling or non-shrinking soils. It is used as a reference method (e.g. the calibration of indirect methods for determination of water content).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16586:2003 defines a gravimetric method for determining soil water content expressed as a volume fraction (volumetric water content) using a known dry bulk density. The standard applies to all non‑swelling and non‑shrinking soils and is intended as a reference method (for example, for calibration of indirect water‑content methods). The procedure converts measured gravimetric water content into volumetric water content by combining the gravimetric result with a known dry bulk density.
Key topics and requirements
- Principle: Dry soil samples to constant mass (typically at 105 °C) and measure mass loss as water evaporated. For soils high in organic matter, lower drying temperatures (often < 70 °C) are customary.
- Conversion formula: Volumetric water content (ϕ) = gravimetric water content (w) × dry bulk density (ρ) / water density (ρw). Water density may be approximated as 1 000 kg·m‑3.
- Scope limits: Applicable to non‑swelling/non‑shrinking soils; inherently less precise than coring‑sleeve methods (ISO 11461) because dry bulk density is not determined on the same sample.
- Sampling & handling: Follow ISO 11465 procedures for sampling, transport and laboratory treatment. If dry bulk density is not known, determine it in accordance with ISO 11272.
- Apparatus & analysis: Equipment and gravimetric procedures comply with ISO 11465 (balances, drying ovens, moisture boxes, etc.).
- Accuracy & uncertainty: Standard details sources of error (sampling disturbance, storage losses/gains, weighing precision, volatilization, sorption, drying variability) and gives formulas for error propagation and reporting of systematic and random components.
- Reporting: Test report must include reference to ISO 16586, sampling location and depth, sampling date, sample mass, dry bulk density values and method used, calculated volumetric water content, and any deviations or corrections.
Applications and users
ISO 16586 is used where a reliable reference measure of volumetric soil water content is required:
- Soil scientists and agronomists for field and laboratory water‑balance studies
- Environmental and analytical laboratories validating or calibrating indirect moisture sensors
- Geotechnical and land‑management professionals requiring standardised volumetric moisture determinations
- Research institutions using gravimetric reference values to compare or develop measurement techniques
This method is particularly useful when a previously determined dry bulk density is available and when a standardized gravimetric reference is needed for quality assurance and method calibration.
