This document specifies linear spline filters for the filtration of surface profiles. It defines, in particular, how to separate large- and small-scale lateral components of surface profiles. The concepts presented for closed profiles are applicable to the case of roundness filtration. Where appropriate, these concepts can be extended to generalized closed profiles, especially for surface profiles with re-entrant features. Examples for the application of the spline filter are given in Annex A. The influence of the tension parameter on the large-scale lateral component of the profile is shown in Annex B.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16610-22:2026 is an international standard that specifies the use of linear spline filters for the filtration and analysis of surface profiles as part of the Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) series. Spline filters are essential tools for separating large-scale and small-scale lateral components of surface profiles, making it possible to assess and control critical aspects of surface texture in manufacturing and metrology. This standard is highly relevant for professionals working with surface metrology, roundness verification, and precision engineering, providing consistent methods for interpreting surface measurements.
Key Topics
-
Linear Spline Filters
- Defines spline filters as linear profile filters for analyzing surface profiles.
- Specifies mathematical concepts for open and closed profiles.
- Outlines how to derive large-scale (waviness) and small-scale (roughness) components.
-
Separation of Surface Profile Components
- Details how spline filters are applied to distinguish between large- and small-scale lateral features.
- Explains concepts for both open (finite-length) and closed (periodic, such as roundness) profiles.
-
Tension Parameter (β)
- Describes the influence of the tension parameter on the filter’s transmission characteristics.
- Supports customization of the filter response to fit application requirements.
- Guidance and examples (see Annex B) illustrate the effects of various β values.
-
Filter Designation
- Spline filters under this standard are designated as FPLS, in accordance with ISO 16610-1.
-
Recommended Values and Implementation
- Provides series of recommended nesting index (cut-off wavelength or frequency) values.
- Includes practical advice for implementing spline filter calculations.
Applications
-
Surface Texture Analysis
- Spline filters effectively extract waviness and roughness information for engineering surfaces, enabling high-precision analysis crucial in quality assurance and manufacturing.
-
Roundness Measurement
- Particularly important for closed profile analysis, spline filters are applied in roundness (circularity) testing to evaluate form deviations in components such as bearings, seals, and rotating machinery.
-
Component Inspection and Quality Control
- Enables robust verification of surface profile specifications, contributing to compliance with global quality standards in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and precision machining.
-
Adaptation to Complex Profiles
- Concepts extend to generalized closed profiles, making this standard suitable for surfaces with re-entrant features often found in advanced manufacturing.
-
Filter Customization
- The ability to adjust the tension parameter allows users to tailor the filter’s response for specific measurement tasks, balancing between smoothness and sensitivity to profile features.
