ISO16813:2006 establishes the general principles of building environment design taking into account healthy indoor environment for the occupants, and protecting the environment for future generations. ISO16813:2006 promotes an approach in which the various parties involved in building environmental design collaborate with one another to provide a sustainable building environment. The unique features of the design process are articulated by the following aims: to provide the constraints concerning sustainability issues from the initial stage of the design process, including building and plant life cycle together with owning and operating costs to be considered at all stages in the design process; to assess the proposed design with rational criteria for indoor air quality, thermal comfort, acoustical comfort, visual comfort, energy efficiency and HVAC system controls at every stage of the design process; to make iterations between decisions and evaluations of the design throughout the design process. ISO16813:2006 is applicable to building environment design for new construction and the retrofit of existing buildings.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16813:2006 - Building environment design - Indoor environment - General principles provides a framework for designing healthy, sustainable indoor environments. It establishes general principles for integrating architectural and building-system design from project inception through final design, promoting collaboration among stakeholders to protect occupant health and the environment. The standard applies to new construction and retrofit projects and emphasizes life-cycle thinking, documentation, iterative evaluation, and measurable design criteria.
Key topics and requirements
- Design process and stages: Defines stages such as project definition, schematic design, detailed design and final design, with required documentation and approvals at each stage.
- Iterative generation and verification: Encourages repeated cycles of design decisions and evaluation to ensure objectives are met.
- Design criteria and parameters: Requires assessment against rational criteria for indoor air quality, thermal comfort, acoustical comfort, visual comfort, energy efficiency, and HVAC system controls.
- Sustainability and cost integration: Introduces constraints related to sustainability, life cycle cost and global cost (life cycle plus social costs) to be considered from the initial design stage.
- Project documentation and assumptions: Mandates documenting constraints, requirements, and any assumptions used when information is incomplete.
- Evaluation and commissioning: Calls for evaluation at every design stage and for commissioning to confirm systems perform according to design parameters throughout the building’s life.
- Harmonization: Stresses harmonizing architectural design with system design without constraining creative architectural solutions.
Practical applications and intended users
