This document specifies the parameters used on the service interface of the recording equipment. Some of them are specified in detail in this document, while others are given in the ISO 14299 series.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16844-7:2022 - Road vehicles - Tachograph systems - Part 7: Parameters defines the parameters used on the service interface of vehicle recording equipment (tachographs). The standard identifies how parameters are named, structured and transmitted (including data identifiers (DID) and routine identifiers (RID)), and specifies ranges, date/time formats and many parameter semantics. Some parameters are described in detail in this part, while additional parameter definitions are referenced in the ISO 14299 series.
Keywords: ISO 16844-7:2022, tachograph parameters, service interface, recording equipment, vehicle tachograph, DIDs, RIDs.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Identifier specification: Defines Data Identifiers (DID) and Routine Identifiers (RID) used for diagnostic and service access to recording equipment.
- Parameter structure and ranges: Rules for transmitted parameter ranges, structured parameters and sample points.
- Date/time parameters: Standardized formats and field definitions for day, month, year, time/date (TD).
- Parameter definitions: Wide-ranging list of parameters for vehicle and driver state and calibration, examples include:
- Vehicle identifiers: VIN, VehicleRegistrationNumber (VRN), VehicleRegistrationDate (VRD)
- Driver data: Driver1Identification (D1I), Driver2Identification (D2I), Driver card expiry dates and download periods
- Performance & sensors: TachographVehicleSpeed (TVS), EngineSpeed (ES), SpeedMeasurementRange (SMR), HighResolutionTotalVehicleDistance (HRTVD)
- Calibration & mechanical: KFactor, NumberOfTeethOnPhonicWheel (NOTOPW), TyreSize (TS), LFactorTyreCircumference (LFTC)
- Operational & compliance: ModeOfOperation (MOD), Overspeed (OS), various driver working-state/time-related parameters (D1WS, D2WS, D1TRS, etc.)
- Maintenance & warnings: NextCalibrationDate (NCD), download warning time delays, mandatory download dates
- Diagnostics and messaging: Parameters for remote session types, reset/heartbeat messages, priority levels and error-delay handling.
Practical applications and users
ISO 16844-7:2022 is used by:
- Tachograph and vehicle manufacturers to implement consistent service interfaces and diagnostics.
- Firmware/software developers building diagnostic tools, fleet management systems and driver/vehicle data extractors.
- Calibration and maintenance centers for verifying sensor and calibration parameters and scheduling mandatory services.
- Regulatory bodies and roadside inspectors requiring standardized parameter definitions for compliance checks and enforcement.
- Fleet operators who integrate tachograph data into driver-hours compliance, route planning and safety analytics.
Typical uses: extracting standardized driver/vehicle parameters over the service interface, validating calibration and sensor data, implementing compliant download and warning logic, and enabling interoperable diagnostic routines.
Related standards
- ISO 14299 series - referenced for additional parameter definitions.
- Other parts of the ISO 16844 series - for broader tachograph system requirements and interfaces (see ISO catalog for related parts).
