ISO 16872:2014 specifies the requirements for fine-tolerance hoist chains of grade VH for use as load chains in hand operated chain hoists for lifting purposes. They are round steel short link chains, electrically welded, heat treated, and tested; they comply with the general conditions of acceptance of ISO 1834. NOTE 1 The letter "V" expresses the grade in accordance with ISO 1834. NOTE 2 The letter "H" expresses that these hoist chains are for hand operated hoists only. NOTE 3 Resistance butt welding and flash welding are listed in ISO 4063. The range of nominal sizes covered by this International Standard is from 3 mm to 13 mm. Fine-tolerance hoist chains, according to this International Standard, are for use in the temperature range −10 °C to 150 °C.
Abstract
ISO 16872:2015 - Overview
ISO 16872:2015 specifies requirements for fine-tolerance hoist chains (Grade VH) used as load chains in hand‑operated chain hoists. It covers round steel short‑link chains that are electrically welded, heat‑treated and tested, and it links to the general acceptance conditions of ISO 1834. The standard applies to nominal chain sizes from 3 mm to 13 mm and to service temperatures from −10 °C to 150 °C.
Key technical topics and requirements
ISO 16872 defines the essential design, material and verification elements for fine‑tolerance hoist chains. Major topics include:
- Dimensions and tolerances
- Nominal size, pitch (nominal p = 3·d, up to 3.3·d), internal/external widths, gauge length and weld dimensions for typical sizes 3–13 mm.
- Maximum weld diameter limits: ≤ 8% above nominal in any direction for Type 1; ≤ 8% perpendicular and ≤ 25% in other planes for Type 2.
- Material and manufacture
- Requirements for steel type, deoxidation, weldability and heat treatment; finished condition expectations and limits on material diameter.
- Mechanical properties and load verification
- Defined metrics such as Manufacturing Proof Force (MPF), Breaking Force (BF), total elongation (A), bend deflection, surface hardness and toughness.
- Lot sampling and acceptance criteria for MPF, BF, elongation, bend and hardness tests as part of verification of safety requirements.
- Testing methods and references
- Cross‑references to related test standards (e.g., ISO 148‑1 Charpy impact, ISO 6507‑1 Vickers hardness, ISO 7500‑1 calibration of tensile machines).
- Marking, certificates and user information
- Grade and manufacturer marking, manufacturer’s certificate, assembly and inspection guidance for chain hoists.
Practical applications - who uses ISO 16872
This standard is essential for:
- Chain manufacturers designing and producing fine‑tolerance hoist chains (Grade VH)
- Hoist and lifting equipment OEMs specifying load chains for hand‑operated hoists
- Procurement and quality engineers ensuring supplied chains meet dimensional and mechanical criteria
- Inspection, maintenance and safety professionals performing acceptance tests, periodic inspections and fitness‑for‑service assessments
- Certification bodies and testing labs executing standardized mechanical and impact tests
Using ISO 16872 helps ensure consistent chain performance, traceable testing, and safer manual lifting operations.
