This document specifies the method of test for the mechanical resistance and strength of components of respiratory protective devices.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16900-6:2021 - "Respiratory protective devices - Methods of test and test equipment - Part 6: Mechanical resistance/strength of components and connections" - specifies standardized test methods for the mechanical resistance and strength of components and connections used in respiratory protective devices (RPD). This part of the ISO 16900 series is a technical supplement to RPD performance standards and defines how to evaluate components such as hoses, visors, connectors and other mechanical parts under realistic stress conditions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Methods of test for mechanical resistance and strength of complete devices or parts; intended as a supplement to RPD performance standards.
- Test categories covered (selected from the standard’s test-method structure):
- Resistance of hoses to deformation (compressive load)
- Flexibility of medium- and high-pressure hoses (bending tests)
- Coil kinking and corner kinking for long hoses
- Exposure to impact from drop
- Mechanical stress tests on components
- Strength of visors
- Strength of connections (including breathable gas supply and high-pressure hose connections)
- Chemical resistance of materials (newly added in the 2021 edition)
- General test requirements: Nominal values are used unless stated; tolerances typically ±5% unless otherwise specified. Ambient test conditions are specified (default 16 °C to 32 °C and (50 ± 30) % relative humidity).
- Reporting and metrology: Each measurement requires an estimate of the uncertainty of measurement; reporting should reference Annex A and may use JCGM 100 for uncertainty calculation.
- Prerequisites: Performance standards indicate which specific test methods to use, number of specimens and sample condition (e.g., ready-for-use, preconditioned).
Practical applications - who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of respiratory protective devices - to design and validate mechanical robustness of hoses, facepieces, visors and connectors.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - to perform repeatable mechanical tests for conformity and product certification.
- Procurement and safety professionals - to specify minimum mechanical resistance requirements when selecting RPD for workplaces (industrial, firefighting, medical, military).
- R&D and quality assurance teams - for product development, failure analysis and benchmarking against international test methods.
Related standards and context
- ISO 16900 series (other parts cover breathing machines, test equipment and performance criteria)
- ISO 16900-5 (breathing machine, RPD headforms and tools) - normative reference
- ISO 16972 (vocabulary and graphical symbols) - normative reference
- Second edition (2021) replaces ISO 16900-6:2015; includes revisions to clauses 6.7, 6.8 and 6.10 and adds chemical resistance testing.
Keywords: ISO 16900-6:2021, respiratory protective devices, mechanical resistance, hose testing, visor strength, connection strength, RPD testing, PPE standards, test methods.
