ISO 16968:2015 is intended for the determination of the minor elements Arsenic, Cadmium, Cobalt, Chromium, Copper, Mercury, Manganese, Molybdenum, Nickel, Lead, Antimony, Vanadium, and Zinc in all solid biofuels. Further, it describes methods for sample decomposition and suggests suitable instrumental methods for the determination of the elements of interest in the digests. The determination of other elements such as Selenium, Tin, and Thallium is also possible with the method described in this International Standard.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16968:2015 specifies standardized procedures for the determination of minor elements in solid biofuels, including but not limited to Arsenic, Cadmium, Cobalt, Chromium, Copper, Mercury, Manganese, Molybdenum, Nickel, Lead, Antimony, Vanadium, and Zinc. The standard covers methodologies for sample decomposition and recommends appropriate instrumental techniques for quantitative analysis of these elements. In addition, the approach outlined can also be used for other elements such as Selenium, Tin, and Thallium. This international standard is essential for ensuring reliable and comparable results when analyzing trace elements in solid biofuels for fuel quality, safety, and environmental compliance.
Key Topics
- Minor Elements in Solid Biofuels: Focuses on elements that, despite their low concentrations, can have a significant impact on biofuel quality and environmental safety.
- Sample Decomposition Methods: Details both wet chemical digestion and instrumental methods, using digestion vessels, nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and (where necessary) hydrofluoric acid.
- Analytical Techniques: Recommends the use of ICP-OES, ICP-MS, GF-AAS, CV-AAS, and HG-AAS, with validation required for alternative methods.
- Contamination Control: Emphasizes minimizing contamination during sampling and sample preparation.
- Calibration and Quality Control: Outlines the use of certified reference materials (CRMs and SRMs), instrument calibration procedures, and blank testing to achieve accurate results.
- Test Reporting: Specifies minimum requirements for reporting results, including identification of the test laboratory, product description, applied methods, and any deviations from the standard procedure.
Applications
ISO 16968:2015 is applied across a range of industries and research areas where the quality and safety of solid biofuels are critical:
- Fuel Quality Assessment: Enables energy producers and suppliers to verify that solid biofuels meet regulatory requirements concerning minor element concentrations.
- Environmental Monitoring: Supports environmental agencies in assessing the impact of solid biofuel use, especially regarding emissions and ash recycling.
- Compliance in International Trade: Facilitates trade by providing a harmonized method for determining trace elements, allowing for reliable comparison and evaluation of international shipments of solid biofuels.
- Laboratory Analysis: Assists laboratory professionals in implementing validated procedures for trace element determination, ensuring high analytical quality and repeatability.
Typical application scenarios include:
- Analyzing wood chips, pellets, agricultural residues, or industrial by-products used as solid biofuels.
- Supporting due diligence and quality assurance for biofuel certification programs.
- Assisting in research to assess the uptake of potentially hazardous elements by energy crops.
Related Standards
ISO 16968:2015 references and aligns with several other important standards for solid biofuel analysis and environmental monitoring:
- ISO 16559: Terminology, definitions, and descriptions for solid biofuels.
- ISO 18134-3: Determination of moisture content in solid biofuels.
- ISO 11885: Water quality - Determination of selected elements by ICP-OES.
- ISO 16993: Conversion of analytical results from one basis to another.
- ISO 17294-2: Water quality - Application of ICP-MS for the determination of elements.
- ISO 17378-2: Determination of arsenic and antimony with hydride generation AAS.
- EN 14780: Preparation of solid biofuel samples.
- EN 12338: Determination of mercury in water quality using amalgamation methods.
Adopting ISO 16968:2015 together with these complementary standards ensures a comprehensive, standardized approach to the analysis and control of minor elements in solid biofuels, facilitating global best practices in quality management and environmental protection.
