ISO 16975-3:2017 specifies guidance on how to conduct fit testing of tight-fitting respiratory protective device (RPD) and on appropriate methods to be used. Fit testing is only one element of a complete RPD programme. The intention of fit testing is to evaluate the effectiveness of the seal between the wearer's face and the respiratory interface (RI). A complete RPD programme is defined in ISO/TS 16975‑1. ISO 16975-3:2017 specifies requirements for conducting RPD fit testing and includes - qualifications/competences of fit-test operators, - specific fit-testing procedures, - interpretation of fit-test results, and - record keeping. A fit test is not required for escape-only RPD.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16975-3:2017 - "Respiratory protective devices - Selection, use and maintenance - Part 3: Fit-testing procedures" provides guidance and requirements for conducting fit testing of tight-fitting respiratory protective devices (RPD). The standard defines the purpose of fit testing (to evaluate the seal between the wearer’s face and the respiratory interface), describes both qualitative and quantitative methods, and positions fit testing as one essential element of a complete RPD programme (see ISO/TS 16975‑1). A fit test is not required for escape-only RPD.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Competence of fit-test operators: qualifications, knowledge of RPD and fit-test methods, ability to set up and monitor equipment, and to identify causes of fit-test failure.
- Fit-test procedures: detailed instructions for qualitative fit testing (QLFT) and quantitative fit testing (QNFT), including aerosol and vapour challenge agents (e.g., isoamyl acetate/banana oil), ambient aerosol CNC methods, generated aerosol procedures, and controlled negative-pressure (CNP) techniques.
- Interpretation and acceptance criteria: definitions of qualitative fit factor (QLFF), quantitative fit factor (QNFF) and required fit factor (RFF) used to assess pass/fail outcomes.
- Practical test elements: subject briefing, exercise protocols during testing, taste-threshold screening for QLFT, and sampling requirements for aerosol systems.
- Program considerations: medical clearance, training for RPD wearers, frequency of fit testing, effects of facial hair, foreign materials, or other PPE that may interfere with the seal.
- Record keeping: documentation requirements for fit-test results and operator records.
- Annexes and supporting content: examples of operator evaluation forms, explanation of RFFs, and criteria for validating new fit-test methods.
Applications and Users
Who uses ISO 16975-3:2017:
- Occupational health & safety managers and RPD programme administrators - to design and maintain fit-testing programmes.
- Competent fit-test operators and trainers - to meet minimum competency and procedural expectations.
- Occupational hygienists and safety consultants - for selecting appropriate fit-test methods and interpreting results.
- Employers in industries with airborne hazards (manufacturing, construction, healthcare, mining) - to verify respiratory protection effectiveness.
- PPE manufacturers and regulators - to align product guidance and compliance with international best practice.
