ISO 17078-3:2009 provides requirements and guidelines for running tools, pulling tools, kick-over tools and latches used for the installation and retrieval of flow control and other devices to be installed in side‑pocket mandrels for use in the petroleum and natural gas industries. This includes requirements for specifying, selecting, designing, manufacturing, quality control, testing and preparation for shipping of these tools and latches. Additionally, it includes information regarding performance testing and calibration procedures.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 17078-3:2009 - Petroleum and natural gas industries - Drilling and production equipment - Part 3 - defines requirements and guidance for running tools, pulling tools, kick-over tools and latches used to install and retrieve flow-control and other devices in side‑pocket mandrels. The standard covers specification, selection, design, manufacturing, quality control, testing, preparation for shipping, and performance testing and calibration procedures. It excludes installation/retrieval processes and centre‑set or tubing‑retrievable mandrel applications.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Functional and technical specifications: Defines functional characteristics, well and operational parameters, and environmental service classes for tools and latches.
- Design validation and verification: Two design‑validation grades allow purchasers to select the appropriate level of design testing and documentation.
- Product functional testing and calibration: Two product‑testing grades specify functional tests and calibration procedures to confirm conformance to design requirements.
- Quality control and supplier obligations: Requirements for documentation, data control, product identification, quality inspection, heat treatment, welding, non‑destructive examination (NDE), storage, shipping preparation, and allowable manufacturing changes.
- Specialized annexes: Normative annexes address specific requirements for running/pulling tools, kick‑over tools, latches, and side‑pocket mandrel tool interfaces; an informative annex provides illustrative figures.
- Grades and classes: Environmental service grades and quality grades enable selection of products for different well conditions and performance expectations.
- Traceability and certification: Certificates of conformance and supplier/manufacturer procedures are required to demonstrate compliance.
Applications and practical value
- Ensures safe and reliable design and manufacture of tools used with side‑pocket mandrels for subsea and onshore production tubing operations.
- Facilitates consistent procurement specifications between operators and suppliers for flow‑control devices, latches and handling tools.
- Reduces operational risk by standardizing testing, calibration and quality assurance procedures for tools that actuate or retrieve downhole devices.
- Supports interoperability among vendors by defining tool‑mandrel interface evaluation practices.
Who should use this standard
- Oil & gas operators and engineering teams specifying side‑pocket mandrel systems and downhole flow‑control installations.
- Tool and latch manufacturers, suppliers and quality managers developing, testing and certifying running, pulling and kick‑over tools.
- Procurement, inspection, and maintenance personnel responsible for receiving, validating and storing running/pulling tools and latches.
- Third‑party testing laboratories and certification bodies performing functional testing and calibration.
