ISO 17096:2015 specifies safety requirements for the following non-fixed load lifting attachments for cranes, hoists, and manually controlled load manipulating devices as defined in Clause 3: - plate clamps; - vacuum lifters; - self priming, - non-self-priming (pump, venturi, turbine); - electric lifting magnets (battery-fed and main-fed); - permanent lifting magnets; - electro-permanent lifting magnets; - lifting beams/spreader beams; - C-hooks; - lifting forks; - clamps. ISO 17096:2015 does not specify the additional requirements for the following: a) load lifting attachments in direct contact with foodstuffs or pharmaceuticals requiring a high level of cleanliness for hygiene reasons; b) hazards resulting from handling hazardous materials (e.g. explosives, hot molten masses, radiating materials); c) hazards caused by operation in an explosive atmosphere; d) hazards caused by noise; e) electrical hazards; f) hazards due to hydraulic and pneumatic components. ISO 17096:2015 does not cover attachments intended to lift people. ISO 17096:2015 does not cover slings, ladles, expanding mandrels, buckets, grabs or grab buckets, and container spreaders.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 17096:2015 (Cranes - Safety - Load lifting attachments)
ISO 17096:2015 sets out international safety requirements for a wide range of non-fixed load lifting attachments used with cranes, hoists and manually controlled load‑manipulating devices. The standard covers equipment such as plate clamps, vacuum lifters, electric/permanent/electro‑permanent lifting magnets, lifting beams/spreader beams, C‑hooks, lifting forks and clamps. It defines terms, design and mechanical requirements, verification and testing methods, and information for use (instructions and marking).
The document is organized around definitions (Clause 3), safety requirements and measures (Clause 4), verification of requirements (Clause 5) and user information and marking (Clause 6), with normative annexes giving verification methods for each main attachment type.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Scope of covered attachments: Non‑fixed attachments that can be fitted by the user to a crane hook or coupling without altering the crane’s integrity (plate clamps, vacuum lifters, magnets, beams, C‑hooks, forks, clamps).
- Defined terms and safety concepts: Design factor, working load limit (WLL), minimum working load, positive/secondary holding devices, exclusion/no‑go/exposure areas.
- Mechanical and control requirements: Mechanical load‑bearing parts, control ergonomics, handles, integrated slings and storage stability.
- Specific requirements by attachment type: Separate clauses and annexes specify requirements and verification for plate clamps, vacuum lifters, lifting magnets, lifting beams, lifting forks and clamps.
- Verification and testing: General verification methods, proof of fatigue strength (testing), minimum classification and individual verification where required.
- Information for use and marking: Instruction handbook contents, maintenance guidance, inspection intervals and minimum marking information to be supplied with the attachment.
- Exclusions/limitations: The standard explicitly does not cover lift devices intended to lift people, slings, ladles, buckets/grabs, container spreaders, nor additional requirements for hygiene (food/pharmaceuticals), hazardous materials, explosive atmospheres, noise, electrical or hydraulic/pneumatic hazards.
Practical applications - who uses ISO 17096
- Manufacturers and designers of load lifting attachments - to ensure product safety, design documentation and verification testing.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - for methodical verification and fatigue testing procedures referenced in the annexes.
- Safety engineers, maintenance teams and site managers - to guide selection, marking, inspection intervals, maintenance and safe use procedures.
- Procurement and compliance teams - to specify requirements when sourcing non‑fixed lifting attachments.
