Abstract

Overview

ISO 17162:2014 defines a standardized method for determining the of advanced monolithic technical ceramics (fine/advanced ceramics) at room temperature. It provides requirements for test machines, jigs, test-piece geometry and surface preparation, measurement methods, and reporting so that compressive strength data are comparable for material development, quality control and component design.

- Square cross-section: side (4 ± 0.1) mm; or cylindrical: diameter (4.5 ± 0.1) mm.
- Height: (8 ± 0.2) mm; end faces parallel to 0.2% relative to side/diameter.
- Square edges chamfered ~45° to (0.25 ± 0.05) mm.
Surface finish categories:
- I: as-fired
- II: machined/grinding (specified diamond grinding sequence; target surface roughness R_t < 2 µm)
- III: lapping/polishing (progressive abrasives; target R_t < 1 µm; visual inspection at 100×)
- IV: agreed procedure (e.g., saw-cut as-agreed)
Procedure and variability:
- Test rate control, specimen centring and careful platen inspection after each test.
- Results typically show scatter due to brittleness; mean and standard deviation reported, with additional statistical analysis as needed (see EN 843-5).
Reporting: Test conditions, geometry, surface finish, apparatus and results must be documented.
