L'ISO 17224:2015 spécifie la méthode utilisée pour les essais de corrosion à haute température de matériaux métalliques par application d'un dépôt de sel, de cendres et/ou d'autres substances, en les exposant à des températures élevées dans un environnement gazeux contrôlé afin d'évaluer leur résistance à la corrosion. Le dépôt est appliqué avant l'exposition aux températures élevées par pulvérisation, trempage ou peinture. L'ISO 17224:2015 ne traite pas des méthodes dans lesquelles les éprouvettes d'essai sont entièrement ou partiellement enfouies dans des substances corrosives ou immergées dans des liquides. Ces méthodes sont traitées dans l'ISO 17248 et l'ISO 17245, respectivement.

Overview
ISO 17224:2015 specifies a laboratory test method for evaluating high‑temperature corrosion of metallic materials exposed to a corrosive deposit (salt, ash or other substances). The method covers preparation of test pieces, application of a deposit (by spraying, dipping or painting), exposure at elevated temperature in a controlled gas environment, and post‑test evaluation to determine corrosion resistance. It excludes tests where specimens are embedded in powders or immersed in liquids (see ISO 17248 and ISO 17245).

- Temperature control & monitoring: Furnace isothermal zone characterized with movable thermocouple. Permissible temperature tolerances (examples from the standard): ≤300 °C ±2 °C; 300–600 °C ±3 °C; 600–800 °C ±4 °C; 800–1 000 °C ±5 °C; 1 000–1 200 °C ±7 °C.
- Measurements and evaluation: Pre‑ and post‑test mass (precision ±0.05 mg between repeats), descaling protocols to remove corrosion products, surface and cross‑section metallography, and reporting of test material, environment and results. Annex A provides chemical/electrolytic removal procedures.
