ISO 17299-5:2014 specifies a deodorant test method using an odour analyser equipped with multiple metal-oxide semiconductor sensors against composite odours. The artificial composite odours used in ISO 17299-5:2014 are a quasi sweat odour, a quasi body odour (nonenal mixture odour) and a quasi excrement odour. ISO 17299-5:2014 applies to all kinds of textile products, such as woven fabrics, knits, threads, yarns, fibres, braids, cords, etc.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 17299-5:2014 specifies a laboratory test method for assessing the deodorant property of textile products using an odour analyser fitted with multiple metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors. The standard evaluates textile performance against three artificial composite odours: quasi sweat odour, quasi body (nonenal mixture) odour, and quasi excrement odour. It applies to all textile forms (woven fabrics, knits, yarns, fibres, braids, cords, etc.).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: A prepared quasi-unpleasant odour gas is sealed with the textile specimen in a 3 L plastic bag for a reaction period (2 hours). Remaining gas is analysed by an odour test instrument to determine odour unit concentration; reduction rate is calculated by comparing results with and without specimen.
- Odour compositions:
- Quasi sweat: ammonia, acetic acid, isovaleric acid
- Quasi body (nonenal mixture): ammonia, acetic acid, isovaleric acid, nonenal
- Quasi excrement: ammonia, acetic acid, hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, indole
- Sensors & instrument: Uses an odour test instrument equipped with 10 MOS sensors. Sensor responses form a response vector; the vector length (root-sum-square of sensor outputs) correlates with odour chemical concentration.
- Calibration: Create calibration curves (quadratic approximation per the standard) mapping response vector length to odour unit concentration (OU/m³). Odour unit for a composite odour is taken as the largest OU value among component chemicals.
- Apparatus & reagents: 3 L plastic bags with inlet tube, air pump (3 L/min), syringes, micro-syringe, oven (for indole sublimation at 80 °C), detector tube (for ammonia), and high-purity diluent gas.
- Output metrics: Odour unit concentration and reduction rate (percentage decrease compared to control) are reported.
Practical applications and users
- Textile manufacturers and R&D teams evaluating deodorant finishes, antimicrobial treatments, or functional fibres.
- Quality assurance labs performing standardized performance verification on apparel, sportswear, technical textiles and hygiene products.
- Third-party testing bodies and certification organizations assessing odour-control claims.
- Product development teams comparing treatments or formulations for odour reduction effectiveness.
