ISO 17450-4:2017 specifies general rules for quantifying GPS deviations for individual GPS characteristics. NOTE GPS deviations can be local or global. A GPS characteristic defined from local GPS deviations is a parameter that transforms the set of local deviations into a global characteristic using a quantifying function (for more details, see Table 1).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 17450-4:2017 is part of the ISO Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) series and defines general rules for quantifying GPS deviations for individual geometrical characteristics. The standard establishes how to transform a set of local geometrical deviations into a single, meaningful global parameter using a quantifying function (see Table 1 in the standard). It covers concepts such as local deviations, reference space, variation curves, material ratio and rank‑order characteristics used to express form, location, orientation and run‑out.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Local geometrical deviation: the signed distance between a point of an input (toleranced) feature and a corresponding point on the reference feature. Deviations can be local or global.
- Reference space: the n‑dimensional curvilinear coordinate system attached to the reference feature (linear A1, areal A2, or two‑directional spaces).
- Default evaluation: local deviation is by default the minimum distance from the input point to the reference feature; the positive direction is defined as out of the material.
- Quantifying functions: mathematical operators that convert the complete set of local deviations (variation curve) into a geometrical characteristic. Examples include rank‑order characteristics such as maximum, minimum, average, median, mid‑range, range and maximum absolute deviation.
- Variation curves: three related representations used for quantification:
- variation curve of local deviations (primary data),
- material ratio curve (cumulative interpretation of deviations),
- amplitude distribution curve (derivative of the material ratio, akin to a probability density).
- Feature types and reference spaces: specifies whether characteristics are linear or areal depending on whether the input feature is an integral/derived line or surface, and addresses cases like derived lines in space (two‑directional reference space).
Practical applications and users
ISO 17450-4 is used to standardize how geometrical deviations are quantified and reported across:
- Metrologists and measurement labs defining CMM and inspection protocols
- Quality engineers implementing GPS/GD&T for manufacturing and assembly
- Design and tolerancing engineers specifying measurable geometrical characteristics
- Standards developers and researchers working on GPS matrix interoperability
Practical outcomes include consistent interpretation of measured deviations, repeatable tolerance evaluation, and clearer links between local measurement data and declared geometric characteristics.
