This document establishes a vocabulary of terms and definitions for resistance spot welding, projection welding and seam welding. NOTE In addition to terms used in English and French, two of the three official ISO languages, this document gives the equivalent terms in German; these are published under the responsibility of the member body for Germany (DIN). However, only the terms and definitions given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms and definitions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 17677-1:2021 - Resistance welding - Vocabulary - Part 1: Spot, projection and seam welding is an international vocabulary standard that defines the terms and definitions used for resistance spot welding, projection welding and seam welding. Published by ISO in 2021 (third edition), this document standardizes technical language across welding procedures, hardware, process parameters and measurements to reduce ambiguity in design, testing, production and documentation. The standard provides English and French ISO terms and also lists German equivalents (published by DIN), though only the English and French entries are the official ISO definitions.
Key topics
The standard groups terms and definitions into practical categories:
- Welding and testing procedures: e.g., resistance spot welding, projection welding, seam welding, peel test, tensile shear test, chisel test.
- Hardware and tools: e.g., electrode, electrode cap, electrode wheel, electrode holder, electrode adaptor, welding head.
- Welding process and parameters: e.g., weld time, heat time, chill time, forge time, electrode force, squeeze time, upslope/downslope, heat-affected zone (HAZ), expulsion.
- Measurements and values: standardizes vocabulary for measured quantities and test outcomes used in quality control and testing (see document for full list).
Notable editorial points: the 2021 edition incorporated terms from ISO 14329 and includes references to ISO/TC 44 work. There are no normative references in this part; it is a terminology resource.
Applications
ISO 17677-1:2021 is practical for:
- Creating unambiguous welding procedure specifications (WPS) and work instructions for spot, projection and seam welding.
- Harmonizing terminology in quality control, inspection reports and test protocols (peel, tensile shear, pillow tests).
- Specifying equipment requirements and procurement documents (electrodes, electrode wheels, welding heads).
- Training materials, technical documentation and translation/localization of welding texts.
- Communicating requirements in cross-border manufacturing, automotive body-in-white assembly, appliance production, and other industries using resistance welding.
Who should use this standard
- Welding engineers and process specialists
- Quality managers and test laboratories
- Technical authors, trainers and educators in welding technology
- Purchasing and specification engineers
- Standards committees, translators and regulatory bodies
