ISO 17683:2014 specifies the classification, dimension and appearance, performance, and test methods for ceramic weld backing. It also specifies marking, packaging, and storage. ISO 17683:2014 is applicable to designing, manufacturing, testing, and accepting ceramic weld backing that are to be used in the double side form with single side weld, such as arc welding, gas welding, vertical gas welding, and submerged arc welding, and the shaping structural steel welding end for carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium alloy, copper alloy etc.

ISO 17683:2014 - Ships and marine technology - Ceramic weld backing for marine use - defines requirements for ceramic weld backing intended for marine and shipbuilding applications. The standard covers classification, dimensions and appearance, performance requirements, test methods, type approval and lot acceptance, plus marking, packaging and storage. It applies to ceramic backing used in double-side form with single-side welding for processes such as arc welding, gas welding, vertical gas welding and submerged arc welding on construction steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium and copper alloys.

- Metallic frame (Type II): mechanical fit and installation checks to prevent play between frame and ceramic blocks.
- Type approval and acceptance
- Type testing required for initial production, after long suspensions (≥6 months), after 4 years continuous production, or after significant process changes.
- Lot acceptance testing covers dimensions, appearance, moisture absorption and chemical composition; lot definition rules apply (e.g., grouping up to 500,000 m of product).
- Marking & packaging
- Products and packaging must show ISO 17683:2014, manufacturer, commercial ID, lot number, piece count and any safety/hygiene warnings. Storage requirements are specified.
