ISO 1813:2014 specifies the maximum electrical resistance of antistatic endless V-ribbed belts, joined V-belts, and single V-belts including wide section belts and hexagonal belts, as well as corresponding production control and individual proof methods of measurements. The application of ISO 1813:2014 is limited to new belts intended to be used in an explosive atmosphere or in situations where there is a fire risk. The test is intended to ensure that the belt is sufficiently conductive to dissipate charges of electricity which can form on it in service.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1813:2014 specifies characteristics and test methods for the electrical conductivity of antistatic V-belts - including V-ribbed belts, joined V-belts, single V-belts, wide section and hexagonal belts. The standard defines maximum electrical resistance limits, production control (factory) tests and laboratory proof tests for new belts intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres or where fire risk exists. Its purpose is to ensure belts are sufficiently conductive to dissipate electrostatic charge in service.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to new antistatic belts used where charge dissipation is critical (explosive atmospheres, fire-risk environments).
- Electrical measurement principle: Measure resistance along a fixed length with an insulation tester under specified conditions; belts pass if resistance does not exceed limit values (given in Tables 1–3 or by Formula (1)).
- Test equipment:
- Insulation tester nominally 500 V d.c. (instrument must be able to apply ≥40 V and ≤3 W to test section); a 1 000 V instrument may be used for resistance > 10 Ω.
- Metal electrodes (preferably brass) with minimum contact width 25 mm and nominal spacing 100 mm; specific grooved electrodes for V-groove and ribbed profiles and movable electrode options for classical/narrow V-belts.
- Belt loading to ensure contact: 1 N per millimetre of nominal belt width (applied per strand for joined belts).
- Production control (factory) test:
- Ambient conditioning 15 °C to 30 °C.
- Straighten belt, apply specified load, measure resistance 5 s ± 1 s after applying voltage.
- Number and positions of test points depend on belt length and type (e.g., two points for belts ≤ 2 000 mm; additional points per 1 000 mm).
- Proof (laboratory) test:
- Standard atmosphere 23 °C/50 % RH (ISO 23529 conditioning).
- Surfaces cleaned (Fuller’s earth) then covered with conductive coating: either conductive silver lacquer/colloidal graphite (surface resistivity < 10 Ω·m) or a specified conductive liquid (polyethylene glycol, water, wetting agent, KCl).
- Specific preparation, electrode selection and measurement procedures detailed.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: belt manufacturers, quality control teams, testing laboratories, OEMs (industrial and automotive), safety and maintenance engineers, and purchasers specifying belts for hazardous locations.
- Practical value: provides reproducible methods to verify antistatic performance, helps ensure compliance for belts used where electrostatic discharge could ignite vapours or dust, supports supplier certification and acceptance testing.
