This document specifies the maximum electrical resistance of the following: — antistatic endless V-ribbed belts; — joined V-belts; — single V-belts, including wide section belts and hexagonal belts. This document also specifies the corresponding production control and individual proof methods of measurements. This document applies to new belts intended to be used in an explosive atmosphere or in situations where there is a fire risk. The test is intended to ensure that the belt is sufficiently conductive to dissipate charges of electricity which can form on it in service.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1813:2025 - "Belt drives - Electrical conductivity of antistatic belts: Characteristics and test methods" defines electrical conductivity requirements and test methods for antistatic V-belts. The standard covers endless V-ribbed belts, joined V-belts, and single V-belts (including wide‑section and hexagonal belts). It applies to new belts intended for use in explosive atmospheres or where fire risk exists and ensures belts are sufficiently conductive to dissipate static charge in service.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Maximum electrical resistance limits for antistatic belts (limit values are given in Tables 1–3 and by a formula for proof tests in Clause 9).
- Test principles: Measure electrical resistance along a fixed belt length using an insulation tester under specified conditions; accept if resistance does not exceed specified limits.
- Test equipment:
- Insulation tester: nominal open‑circuit voltage 500 V d.c., able to apply ≥40 V with ≤3 W in test section, measurement accuracy ±5% (1 000 V allowed for resistances >10 Ω).
- Metal electrodes: contact surfaces ≥25 mm wide, nominal 100 mm spacing; V‑groove electrodes sized to the pulley profile for single and joined V‑belts; special electrodes for V‑ribbed belts (driving flanks and back).
- Loading device: applies a force of 1 N per mm nominal belt width to ensure contact.
- Production control (factory) method (Clause 8): Conditioning at 15–30 °C; straighten belt, apply specified force, avoid condensation, measure resistance 5 s ±1 s after voltage application; number of test points depends on belt length and type.
- Proof (laboratory) method (Clause 9): Conditioning in standard atmosphere 23/50 (23 ±2 °C, 50 ±5% RH); surface cleaning with Fuller's earth; apply conductive coating (either a silver lacquer/colloidal graphite with dried film resistivity <10 Ω, or a specified conductive liquid mixture) before measurement.
- Acceptance criteria: Individual test values must be ≤ the limits in the standard (see Tables/Clause references).
Applications and typical users
ISO 1813:2025 is used to manage static‑dissipation performance of belts in applications with ignition or fire hazards:
- Belt manufacturers and production QA for production control and marking.
- Independent testing laboratories performing proof tests on individual belts.
- Safety engineers and maintenance teams specifying replacement belts for equipment in hazardous areas (e.g., petrochemical, grain handling, mining).
- OEMs, procurement and design engineers specifying belt selection criteria for conveyors, compressors and drive systems exposed to explosive atmospheres.
