This document describes methods of evaluating the resistance of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers to the action of liquids by measurement of properties of the rubbers before and after immersion in test liquids. The liquids concerned include current service liquids, such as petroleum derivatives, organic solvents and chemical reagents, as well as reference test liquids.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1817:2022 - Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic - Determination of the effect of liquids specifies standardized laboratory methods to evaluate how liquids affect vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers. The standard covers immersion-based tests using a range of test liquids (petroleum derivatives, organic solvents, chemical reagents and reference fluids) and quantifies changes in physical properties before and after exposure. ISO 1817:2022 defines five testing methods (A–E) and associated apparatus, calibration, reporting and precision requirements.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test scope: Measures resistance of rubber to liquid action by comparing properties before and after immersion and after drying where applicable.
- Measured properties:
- Change in mass, volume and dimensions
- Extractable matter (loss of soluble constituents)
- Change in hardness and tensile stress–strain properties
- Test methods and apparatus:
- Method A: glass vessel with lid (large liquid:test-piece ratio)
- Method B: glass vessel with stopper (minimise evaporation/air ingress)
- Method C: glass vessel with reflux condenser (volatile liquids near boiling point)
- Method D: pressure vessel (tests above boiling point or under overpressure; use with flammable liquids)
- Method E: apparatus for testing one surface only
- Key conditions: prescribed liquid-to-test-piece volume ratios, control of air above liquid, temperature and immersion duration, inert hanger materials, and prohibitions on stirring (except Method C).
- Calibration and precision: references to calibration procedures and precision data; requirements for test reporting and documentation.
- Safety and environmental notes: users are responsible for safe handling, disposal and local safety measures for hazardous liquids and generated waste.
Practical applications and who uses this standard
ISO 1817:2022 is used for:
- Material selection and R&D - comparing rubber compounds for oil, fuel and solvent resistance.
- Quality control - routine verification of rubber components (seals, hoses, gaskets, O‑rings) against expected fluid exposure.
- Failure analysis - assessing extraction or swelling effects that may have contributed to service degradation.
- Compliance and procurement - specifying liquid compatibility requirements for OEMs and suppliers in automotive, oil & gas, hydraulic systems, chemical processing and industrial equipment.
Typical users: rubber manufacturers, independent test laboratories, materials engineers, product designers, OEM quality teams and procurement specialists.

Note: ISO 1817:2022 provides controlled laboratory measures of liquid action on rubber; results help assess suitability but do not guarantee identical in-service behaviour because factors like stress, thickness and oxygen exposure can influence real-world performance.
