This document details a classification of imperfections that can occur in brazing joints. In addition, guidance is provided on quality levels and suggested limits for imperfections are detailed. For requirements not covered by this document, reference can be made to other sources, such as statutory regulations, codes of practice and technical delivery conditions. No information is given on how imperfections are to be assessed in individual cases because this depends on the requirements for the particular brazed joint. These imperfections are not always detectable by the use of non-destructive testing alone. This document covers only imperfections that can occur in connection with brazing without the effect of any additional service loads. Only the type, shape and position of such imperfections are covered; no indication is given of the conditions of occurrence or causes. For requirements for brazed joints which are relevant and essential to the particular function of the component, reference can be made to the relevant documentation, for example manufacturing documents or procedure sheets. It is important that these requirements be precisely prescribed and that conformity with them be verifiable. Conformity can be established by testing either the brazed assembly itself or a test piece produced under comparable conditions. This document does not specify requirements for acceptance levels for imperfections, since these will differ very markedly depending on the application, but it does suggest some quality levels which can be of value in the absence of more detailed information.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18279:2023 - Brazing - Imperfections in brazed joints provides a standardized classification of imperfections that can occur in brazed joints and offers guidance on quality levels and suggested limits. The second edition (2023) updates the 2003 version, adds an additional quality level in Annex B and re-evaluates quality criteria to reflect advances in brazing reliability. This ISO document does not prescribe acceptance criteria for all applications, nor does it explain causes or inspection methods in detail - it focuses on the type, shape and position of imperfections that arise from brazing operations.
Key topics and technical content
- Classification system: Imperfections are grouped into six broad categories - cracks, cavities, solid inclusions, bonding imperfections, shape/size defects, and miscellaneous imperfections. Each imperfection type is given a clear designation and description.
- External vs. internal imperfections: The standard distinguishes between surface-visible defects (e.g., underfill, flux seepage, incomplete fillet, surface-breaking porosity) and internal defects (e.g., filling imperfections, gas entrapment, lack of fusion).
- Quality levels and suggested limits: Annex B suggests quality levels and recommended limits as a reference when project‑specific criteria are not available. These are advisory - final acceptance criteria must reflect the component’s function and service conditions.
- Evaluation guidance: Annex A provides practical guidance for evaluating imperfections and selecting appropriate test methods. The standard notes the limitations of non‑destructive testing (NDT) - some brazing imperfections may not be detectable by NDT alone and may require testing of the brazed assembly or representative test pieces.
- Scope boundaries: ISO 18279 covers imperfections arising from brazing only (without additional service loads) and does not address causes, process parameters, or exact assessment procedures.
Practical applications and users
ISO 18279:2023 is valuable for:
- Brazing and welding engineers specifying inspection criteria and designing joints.
- Quality assurance (QA) and NDT inspectors developing acceptance checks and test plans.
- Manufacturers and fabricators creating manufacturing documents, procedure sheets and supplier contracts.
- Designers and procurement teams who need to define verifiable quality requirements for brazed assemblies. Use cases include preparing technical delivery conditions, setting inspection limits when no other guidance exists, and determining when destructive testing or representative test pieces are required.
Related standards and references
- EN 12797 and EN 12799 - examples of test methods referenced in Annex A for selection of appropriate inspection techniques.
- ISO/TC 44 (Welding and allied processes) - the technical committee responsible for this standard.
- Other applicable codes of practice, statutory regulations and technical delivery conditions should be consulted to define acceptance criteria specific to the application.
