ISO 18334:2010 gives guidance on the minimum quality criteria concerning the assembly of new wooden pallets. This includes component placement accuracy, fastening schedules and fastener placement, the clinching of fasteners, and guidelines for the placement of components the characteristics of which impact pallet performance. ISO 18334:2010 does not address safety problems, if any, associated with pallet assembly.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18334:2010 provides internationally recognized guidance on minimum quality criteria for the assembly of new wooden pallets. The standard focuses on factors that affect pallet performance - component placement accuracy, selection and arrangement of fasteners, rivet/clinching practice, and placement of components whose characteristics influence how a pallet performs in handling and transport. The standard does not address safety issues associated with assembly.
Keywords: ISO 18334:2010, wooden pallets, pallet assembly quality, fasteners, component placement, tolerances, ISPM 15.
Key Topics
-
Component positioning and tolerances
- The standard specifies positioning tolerances for pallet components. Manual handling systems allow larger tolerances (for example ±6 mm) while automated handling systems require tighter positioning control (approximately a few millimetres).
- Floor boards, stringers/blocks and entry elements must be aligned and limited so that misplacement is restricted to a defined proportion of components per pallet.
-
Fastening: types and minimum counts
- Fastener types covered include nails, staples, bolts, wood screws and coated bolts. The standard gives recommended minimum numbers of driven fasteners by component width (e.g., greater widths require additional fasteners) and recommends at least two bolts for corner assemblies when bolts or screws are used.
- Table guidance (summarised): narrower floor elements use fewer driven fasteners while wider elements require three or four fasteners depending on width bands.
-
Fastener placement and clinching
- Fasteners must be positioned to minimise splitting: maintain minimum edge distances (for example 25 mm from plank edges) and specified spacings between fasteners.
- For stringer-style pallets the distance from a fastener to the board edge should be a multiple of the fastener shank diameter and spacing should follow the standard’s multiple-of-diameter rule.
- Riveted fasteners must extend sufficiently beyond the assembled thickness and be clinched to avoid head uplift.
-
Acceptable defects and limits
- Guidance covers handling knots, shakes, resin pockets and through-splits in relation to fastener placement. Protruding fastener heads on exposed surfaces are not acceptable; limited, non-exposed protrusions may be tolerated in small percentages.
Applications
- Use ISO 18334:2010 to develop or audit pallet manufacturing and quality-control procedures.
- Apply the guidance when specifying pallet production tolerances for manual or automated handling environments.
- Implement fastener schedules and placement rules to improve durability and intermodal performance.
- Ensure manufactured pallets meet international expectations for assembly quality, aiding supply-chain consistency.
