ISO 18435-1:2009 defines an integration modelling method and its use to integrate diagnostics, capability assessment, prognostics and maintenance applications with production and control applications. The integration of other application aspects, such as security, is outside the scope of ISO 18435.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18435-1:2009 - "Industrial automation systems and integration - Diagnostics, capability assessment and maintenance applications integration - Part 1: Overview and general requirements" defines an integration modelling method for connecting diagnostics, capability assessment, prognostics and maintenance applications with production and control applications. The standard focuses on integration and interoperability requirements for the operation and maintenance phase of a manufacturing system lifecycle. Security integration is explicitly outside its scope.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Integration models and interoperability templates: Defines application integration models and rules to identify interfaces and reference interoperability profiles based on international standards.
- Application domains and domain matrix: Categorizes domains such as operations planning and scheduling, supervisory control and HMI, control/I‑O/historians, capability assessment, prognostics/health/quality/safety, condition monitoring, maintenance planning, work order management, and asset configuration.
- Integration within and among domains: Specifies requirements for application, process and resource interoperability both inside a domain and across hierarchical levels in an enterprise.
- Conformance and compliance: Describes conformance aspects and compliance expectations for adopting interoperability templates and integration models.
- Asset lifecycle focus: Emphasizes requirements to support maintenance strategies (breakdown, time‑based, condition‑based maintenance) and the first cycle of maintenance task execution-planning, diagnostics/monitoring, repair/treatment and evaluation.
- Reference to established standards: Aligns with existing standards and frameworks (e.g., IEC 62264, ISO 15745, ISO 13374, IEC 61499, IEC 61131, MIMOSA OSA‑CBM/OSA‑EAI).
Applications and practical value
Who benefits:
- Developers and system integrators designing, implementing and commissioning industrial automation systems that must exchange diagnostic and maintenance data with control and production applications.
- Equipment and device suppliers creating interoperable diagnostics, prognostics and maintenance products.
- Plant operators and maintenance managers aiming to improve asset availability, reduce downtime and coordinate maintenance with production schedules.
Practical uses:
- Enable interoperable condition‑based maintenance (CBM) by standardizing how diagnostics and prognostics share data with control systems and historians.
- Reduce integration effort and procurement risk by referencing pre‑defined interoperability profiles during system specification.
- Improve safety, quality and cost control by making equipment condition and maintenance data available across production and enterprise systems.
Related standards
ISO 18435-1 references and aligns with multiple standards and frameworks for automation and asset management, including:
- IEC 62264, ISO 15745, ISO 13374, IEC 61499, IEC 61131, IEC 61915, ISO/IEC 15459-1, and MIMOSA OSA‑CBM / OSA‑EAI.
