ISO 18479-1:2015 defines design criteria and safety requirements for non-integrated personnel work platforms (PWPs) which, if approved for use on the rough-terrain truck, can be fitted and secured to the forks, carriage or attachment bracket of a rough-terrain truck to elevate occupants with or without materials and tools to raised work positions without any controls in the platform to control movement. Design, safety requirements and test methods for variable-reach rough-terrain trucks are covered in ISO 10896‑1. Personnel work platforms equipped with controls which affect movement of the rough-terrain truck are excluded from this part of ISO 18479. The requirements of this part of ISO 18479 shall apply except where national or local regulations are more stringent. ISO 18479-1:2015 is not applicable to non-integrated personnel work platforms manufactured before the date of its publication.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18479-1:2015 sets out the design criteria and safety requirements for non-integrated personnel work platforms (PWPs) for rough-terrain trucks. These platforms are designed to safely elevate personnel, with or without their tools and materials, to raised worksites using rough-terrain trucks. Unlike integrated platforms, non-integrated PWPs have no controls for truck movement within the platform itself. The standard ensures that, when properly secured to rough-terrain trucks, these platforms maximize operator and occupant safety and meet stringent international requirements.
ISO 18479-1:2015 is applicable only to non-integrated platforms manufactured after its publication and should be applied except where stricter national or local requirements exist. It does not address platforms equipped with controls that can affect truck movement, nor does it apply to variable-reach trucks addressed in other standards.
Key Topics
Main elements covered by ISO 18479-1:2015 include:
- Design Requirements
- Material specifications for durability and non-flammability
- Size and dimensional limitations for compatibility with rough-terrain trucks
- Load supporting elements with defined safety factors for various materials
- Safety Features
- Guardrail systems, including minimum height, anchorage requirements for lanyards, secure entrances, and prohibition of chains or ropes as gates
- Slip-resistant, self-draining flooring with defined maximum opening dimensions
- Protection against accidental falls and inadvertent platform pivoting
- Verification and Testing
- Visual examinations
- Functional tests for structural integrity
- Compliance with specified marking and information requirements
- Capacity and Usage Information
- Clear capacity warnings and maximum occupation limits
- Manufacturer identification, model designation, and other required permanent markings
Applications
ISO 18479-1:2015 is vital for:
- Manufacturers of Rough-Terrain Trucks:
- Ensures that any non-integrated PWP designed for use on their products meets international safety and design requirements.
- Platform Designers and Producers:
- Provides a framework to develop PWPs with robust safety measures, appropriate materials, and accurate capacity marking.
- Safety Auditors and Inspectors:
- Offers criteria for evaluating platform compliance through verification methods and ensures user information is clear and complete.
- Construction and Industrial Users:
- Assures employers and fleet operators that platforms compliant with this standard offer improved safety for elevated work and facilitate legal compliance in jurisdictions that reference ISO standards.
- Procurement Teams:
- Enables informed purchasing decisions by providing clear certification requirements for platforms intended for use with rough-terrain trucks.
Related Standards
For comprehensive safety and performance, consider these related ISO standards:
- ISO 10896-1: Safety requirements and verification for variable-reach rough-terrain trucks
- ISO 2867: Access systems for earth-moving machinery
- ISO 12100: General safety principles for machinery design, risk assessment, and risk reduction
- ISO 16368: Design, calculations, safety requirements, and test methods for mobile elevating work platforms
- ISO 18479-2: User requirements for non-integrated PWPs used with rough-terrain trucks
Implementing ISO 18479-1:2015 helps harmonize equipment across industries and locations, enhances operator protection, and supports international best practices for elevated work with rough-terrain trucks.
