This document specifies the reference test methods for determining the physical and mechanical properties of eye and face protectors. This document does not apply to any eye and face protection products for which the requirements standard(s) specifies other test methods. Other test methods can be used if shown to be equivalent and include uncertainties of measurement no greater than those required of the reference method.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18526-3:2020 - Eye and face protection - Test methods - Part 3: Physical and mechanical properties - defines the reference test methods for assessing the physical and mechanical performance of eye and face protectors. The standard documents how to measure properties such as field of view, retention, material quality and resistance to heat, UV, corrosion, fogging, droplets, dust, and mechanical impacts. It is intended as the reference set of methods unless a product-specific requirements standard prescribes different tests. Alternative methods may be used only if demonstrated equivalent with no greater measurement uncertainty.
Key topics and technical requirements
The document organizes practical, repeatable test procedures for evaluating protective eyewear and face protection. Major technical topics include:
- Preparatory and general test requirements - sample conditioning, reporting and measurement uncertainty.
- Physical inspection and optical checks - visual inspection, field of view and area-to-be-protected assessments (frontal and lateral).
- Retention and fit - headband/harness sit-and-fit tests to verify secure retention.
- Material and surface quality - visual assessment of lenses and surface defects.
- Environmental resistance tests:
- Thermal exposure and ignition resistance
- Ultraviolet (solar and artificial) resistance
- Corrosion resistance
- Chemical resistance
- Contamination and ingress protection:
- Fogging resistance
- Protection against droplets, liquid streams, large dust particles, and fine dust/gases
- Protection against radiant heat
- Mechanical tests:
- Unmounted lens tests (static load, drop ball)
- Complete protector tests (drop ball, ballistic impact, high mass)
- Resistance to surface damage by flying fine particles
Test reporting requirements are specified for each method so results are comparable and traceable.
Applications and who uses this standard
ISO 18526-3 is valuable for:
- Manufacturers and designers of safety goggles, face shields and visors for product development and quality control.
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies conducting compliance testing and issuing approvals.
- Occupational safety professionals and procurement teams selecting PPE that meets defined physical and mechanical criteria.
- Regulators and standards committees harmonizing test methods across markets.
Typical uses include performance validation, conformity assessment, design verification, and supplier audits for personal protective equipment (PPE).
Related Standards (if applicable)
ISO 18526-3 is part of the ISO 18526 series of test-method standards for eye and face protection. It should be used in conjunction with product-specific requirement standards and other parts of the series to demonstrate full compliance for safety eyewear and face protection products.
