This document specifies the temperature, humidity and time conditions used for the conditioning and testing of all types of conveyor belt, irrespective of whether they have plastics or rubber covers. It also specifies the requirements for the time interval to be observed between production and testing of conveyor belt test pieces. Special conditions applicable to a particular test or material or simulating a particular climatic environment are not included.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18573:2024 - Conveyor belts - Test atmospheres and conditioning periods is an International Standard developed by ISO for ensuring uniform and reliable testing methodologies for conveyor belts. This document specifies the temperature, humidity, and time conditions required for the conditioning and testing of all types of conveyor belts, whether they have plastics or rubber covers. It also defines the minimum time interval between the production of conveyor belt test pieces and the commencement of testing to ensure accurate and reproducible results. By standardizing these environmental conditions, ISO 18573:2024 helps manufacturers, testers, and end-users achieve meaningful and comparable test results across the conveyor belt industry.
Key Topics
ISO 18573:2024 covers several fundamental aspects essential for the standardized testing of conveyor belts, including:
- Standard Test Atmospheres: Defines several prescribed atmospheric conditions (temperature and humidity) for conditioning and testing conveyor belt samples. The document lists multiple standard atmospheres (e.g., 20°C/65% RH, 23°C/50% RH, 27°C/65% RH, etc.) appropriate for different needs and specifications.
- Conditioning Periods: Specifies the minimum conditioning times before testing, varying according to whether both temperature and humidity are controlled, or temperature only.
- Preconditioning Requirements: Details procedures for cases where moisture equilibrium is critical, including exposure to very low humidity at elevated temperatures.
- Time Interval Before Testing: Sets out mandatory waiting periods between completion of conveyor belt production and the start of tests, with extended periods for light conveyor belts as defined in relevant ISO standards.
- Test Piece Handling: Outlines the best practice for placing test pieces during conditioning to ensure uniform exposure and to avoid stress, strain, or light exposure.
Applications
ISO 18573:2024 is applicable across the conveyor belt industry, supporting manufacturers, research laboratories, quality assurance teams, and third-party testing organizations. Its practical applications include:
- Quality Control: Ensuring that conveyor belt materials are consistently tested under controlled environmental conditions, reducing variability in test results.
- Product Development: Providing a reliable baseline for developing new conveyor belt materials, including plastics and rubber compounds, by controlling influencing factors such as temperature and humidity during testing.
- Regulatory Compliance: Assisting manufacturers in complying with international trade and safety regulations by adhering to globally accepted test procedures.
- Repeatability and Reproducibility: Enabling meaningful comparison of test data between different production lots, laboratories, or across international borders by minimizing environmental variables.
- Testing for Certification: Serving as a foundation for product certification processes and for meeting customer or industry-specific requirements for conveyor belt performance and reliability.
Related Standards
ISO 18573:2024 references and aligns with a number of related international standards to further enhance consistency across material testing. Notable related standards include:
- ISO 139 - Textiles - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing
- ISO 23529 - Rubber - General procedures for preparing and conditioning test pieces for physical test methods
- ISO 2231 - Rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing
