This document specifies the main characteristics and test methods of new high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) fibre ropes used for offshore stationkeeping.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18692-3:2020 - Fibre ropes for offshore stationkeeping - Part 3: High modulus polyethylene (HMPE) specifies the main characteristics and test methods for new HMPE fibre ropes used to stationkeep floating offshore structures. It sets material requirements, mechanical performance criteria and type/production testing protocols to ensure safe, predictable behaviour of HMPE ropes in marine stationkeeping applications.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and materials
- Core fibres must be high-tenacity HMPE with an average fibre tenacity ≥ 2.5 N/tex (fibre qualification per Annex A).
- Cover materials and other assembly elements follow ISO 18692-1 requirements.
- Mechanical performance
- Minimum breaking strength (MBS) is defined by reference rope diameters (examples: approx. 2,500 kN for reference 63 up to 20,000 kN for reference 180).
- Minimum core tenacity of the rope core: 1.3 N/tex (measured per ISO 18692-1).
- Creep properties: rope creep must meet manufacturer-declared limits and be verified using the Annex B test method; fibre manufacturers must supply creep-rate models and allowable-extension data.
- Torque and cyclic loading: torque-neutral or torque-matched constructions per ISO 18692-1; cyclic loading endurance requires residual strength ≥ 80% of MBS after the specified test.
- Particle ingress protection: core protection against particle ingress is required unless otherwise specified.
- Testing and certification
- Type testing: sampling plan and tests for breaking strength, core tenacity, stiffness, creep, linear density, cyclic endurance, cover thickness and particle ingress (see Clause 7 and Annexes A–B).
- Production testing, reporting, marking and certification follow ISO 18692-1 procedures.
Practical applications and users
ISO 18692-3:2020 is used to select, specify, manufacture and verify HMPE rope systems for offshore stationkeeping - e.g., mooring lines and tethers for floating platforms, FPSOs, and other floating assets requiring precise stationkeeping. Primary users:
- Rope manufacturers and fibre suppliers (qualification, production QA)
- Offshore mooring designers and naval architects (design input, material selection)
- Procurement teams and asset owners (specification and acceptance criteria)
- Test laboratories and classification societies (type approval and certification)
- Offshore operators and maintenance teams (inspection criteria and lifecycle planning)
