ISO 18774:2015 defines and describes rules for an internationally valid system for building short names of any kind of financial instrument within a defined structure. This International Standard is intended for use in any application in the trading and administration of securities globally. The FISN has been developed after taking into account the need of human-readability as well as interoperability with existing standards and systems.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 18774:2015 specifies rules for creating a standardized, human‑readable short name for any financial instrument - the Financial Instrument Short Name (FISN). Designed for global use in trading, clearing, settlement and securities administration, the FISN provides a fixed‑structure, maximum‑length short description that improves interoperability, data consistency and Straight Through Processing (STP) across market participants.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Maximum length and character set: FISNs use up to 35 alphanumeric characters based on ISO/IEC 8859-1; the slash ("/") separates issuer and description; blanks and defined punctuation are allowed where required.
- Issuer short name: Up to 15 alphanumeric characters (can be extended for collective investment vehicles and derivatives when necessary).
- Delimiter and structure: Format is IssuerShortName/InstrumentDescription. Instrument description has up to 19 characters when issuer uses full allowance.
- Instrument description components: Sequenced, abbreviated attributes depending on instrument type - e.g., for debt: Interest rate/type, instrument type abbreviation, maturity date (YYYYMMDD), rank, pool number, class, series, tranche, trust, program, guarantee, restrictions. Interest rates omit the percent sign and use a decimal point. Perpetual instruments use a standard abbreviation.
- Type‑specific rules: Structured sequences and abbreviations are defined for debt, equity (shares, depository receipts, preferred shares, collective investment vehicles), entitlements (rights, warrants) and derivatives (options, futures, options on futures, futures on options).
- Registration Authority (RA): Responsible for allocation and maintenance of the abbreviations list, FISN allocation, applications and service provision.
- Human‑readability and interoperability: FISN complements identifiers like ISIN (ISO 6166) and CFI (ISO 10962) to aid both machine processing and investor comprehension.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: market data vendors, exchanges, custodians, banks, asset managers, registrars, system integrators and regulators.
- Where applied: trading screens, price feeds, settlement messages, reference data repositories, regulatory reporting and investor communications.
- Benefits: consistent short descriptions across systems, reduced ambiguity, improved STP, clearer retail investor identification, better screen space usage and enhanced data transparency/liquidity.
