This document specifies the methods of preparation of test specimens and the test methods for determining the properties of polypropylene (PP) moulding and extrusion materials. It gives requirements for handling test material and for conditioning both the test material before moulding and the specimens before testing. This document specifies procedures and conditions for the preparation of test specimens, and procedures for measuring properties of the materials from which these specimens are made. Properties and test methods which are suitable and essential to characterize PP moulding and extrusion materials are listed. The properties have been selected from the general test methods in ISO 10350-1. Other test methods in wide use for, or of particular significance to PP moulding and extrusion materials are also included in this document, as are the designatory properties specified in ISO 19069-1.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19069-2:2024 - Plastics - Polypropylene (PP) moulding and extrusion materials - Part 2 defines standardized procedures for the preparation of test specimens and the determination of material properties for polypropylene (PP) moulding and extrusion materials. The standard specifies handling and conditioning of test material, injection- and compression‑moulding procedures, and the test conditions used to measure rheological, mechanical, thermal and electrical properties that characterise PP grades.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Specimen preparation methods
- Injection moulding in accordance with ISO 294-1 / ISO 294-3 with specified melt and mould temperatures, injection velocity, hold and cycle times. (Example: melt temperature depends on MFR: <1.5 g/10 min → 255 °C; 1.5–7 g/10 min → 230 °C; ≥7 g/10 min → 200 °C.)
- Compression moulding in accordance with ISO 293 with prescribed moulding temperature (210 °C), cooling rate (15 ± 2 K/min), and pressures (5 or 10 MPa).
- Uniformity checks: injection-moulded parts shall not differ in mass by more than 1 %.
- Prevention of thermal degradation: avoid increase of MFR to >1.5× original; if observed, lower melt temperature by 10 °C steps and report adjustments.
- Conditioning
- Unfilled specimens: condition for 40–96 h at (23 ± 2) °C (no RH requirement).
- Fillers/additives sensitive to moisture: condition at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 10) % RH unless proven unnecessary.
- Electrical tests: perform in standard atmosphere (23 ± 2) °C, (50 ± 10) % RH.
- Property determination
- Uses test methods selected from ISO 10350-1 and other specific standards to measure MFR/MVR, density, tensile, flexural, impact, thermal oxidative stability, DSC/TMA results, electrical and dielectric properties.
- Test temperatures and specimen types are specified for reproducibility and comparability.
Applications and Who Uses It
- Material suppliers for characterizing and declaring PP grade properties.
- Quality and test laboratories for consistent, reproducible testing of PP moulding and extrusion materials.
- Product designers and OEMs assessing suitability of PP for injection moulded or extruded components.
- Regulatory bodies and procurement teams requiring comparable single-point data for material selection and compliance.
- R&D teams optimizing processing windows and avoiding thermal degradation during moulding.
