This document specifies the safety requirements and measures for multi-blade rip sawing machines with manual loading or unloading or both, capable of continuous production use, hereinafter referred to also as “machines”, designed to cut solid wood and materials with similar physical characteristics to wood. This document deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events as listed in Annex A, relevant to the machines, when operated, adjusted and maintained as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer including reasonably foreseeable misuse. Transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping phases are also taken into account. This document does not deal with specific hazards related to the combination of single machines with any other machine as part of a line. This document is not applicable to machines: — intended for use in potentially explosive atmosphere; — manufactured prior to its publication.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 19085-13:2025 (Woodworking machine safety)
ISO 19085-13:2025 is the second edition international standard that specifies safety requirements for multi-blade rip sawing machines with manual loading and/or unloading. It applies to machines designed for cutting solid wood and wood-like materials in continuous production, covering operation, adjustment, maintenance and reasonably foreseeable misuse. The standard also addresses transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping. Exclusions: machines for potentially explosive atmospheres, machines manufactured before publication, and specific hazards from combining single machines into production lines.
Key topics and technical requirements
This standard provides detailed safety measures across machine design, controls and protective devices. Major technical topics include:
- Control system safety: reliability, start/stop functions, safe stops, emergency stop, manual reset and standstill detection.
- Tool and braking requirements: tool fixing, spindle locking, circular saw flange characteristics and braking/run-down control.
- Mode selection and powered adjustments: modes such as pressure shoe/board cutting, cleaning, powered axial adjustment, and guarded powered adjustments.
- Safeguards and access prevention: fixed guards, interlocked movable guards, hold-to-run, two‑hand controls, enabling controls, ESPE (light curtains) and PSPE.
- Hazard prevention: measures against ejection, stability, risk of break-up, impact, crushing/shearing at feed mechanisms and conveyors, and workpiece support/guide.
- Other hazards: noise mitigation and declaration, chip and dust emission, fire, electrical safety, ergonomics, lighting, pneumatics/hydraulics, EMC, static electricity and maintenance considerations.
- Information for use: marking, warning devices and comprehensive instruction handbook requirements.
- Annexes: informative Annex A (list of significant hazards), Annex B (required performance level), Annex C (stability test).
Practical applications and who uses this standard
ISO 19085-13 is essential for:
- Machine manufacturers and designers developing compliant multi‑blade rip sawing machines.
- Safety engineers and CE/ regulatory compliance teams ensuring conformity with international woodworking machine safety requirements.
- Plant managers, procurement and maintenance staff specifying safe equipment, training operators and planning maintenance.
- Notified bodies and certification bodies evaluating machine safety and performance levels per Annex B.
- Risk assessors and health & safety professionals creating workshop risk controls, guard configurations and safe operating procedures.
