This document specifies the environmental conditions to evaluate the accelerated degradation for the adhesion interface performance in plastic-metal assemblies.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19095-6:2021 - Plastics - Evaluation of the adhesion interface performance in plastic‑metal assemblies - Part 6: Accelerated degradation test - defines environmental conditions and procedures to accelerate and evaluate long‑term degradation at the adhesion interface of plastic‑metal assemblies. The standard is intended to simulate severe heat and moisture exposure (e.g., high temperature and saturated water‑vapour pressure) to assess interface performance in a shortened timeframe while avoiding bulk plastic deformation.
Key topics and technical requirements
-
Scope and principle
- Specifies environmental conditions to evaluate accelerated degradation of adhesion interfaces in plastic‑metal assemblies.
- Uses elevated temperature and humidity (for example, 120 °C and ~0.2 MPa saturated water vapour pressure) inside a sealed vessel to accelerate ageing.
- Requires test temperatures to be at least 20 °C below the softening temperature of the plastic to prevent deformation (see Annex C).
-
Apparatus
- Oven with air circulation (±1 °C), sealed pressure vessels/autoclaves (up to ~2.0 MPa) with pressure gauge and purge lines, sterilizers (105–135 °C with saturated steam), vacuum ovens and a balance with 0.1 mg resolution.
- Safety devices such as relief valves or bursting discs (operating example: 3.5 MPa) are specified.
-
Procedure
- Prepare specimens per ISO 19095‑2 and condition per ISO 19095‑1.
- Place samples in a pressure vessel avoiding contact with liquid water; add controlled water volume (e.g., 10–20 ml in a 300 ml vessel).
- Heat to target temperature, purge air at ~100 °C to establish steam atmosphere, maintain for the chosen test period (examples in Annex A: 120 °C for 96–288 h).
- Cool, re‑condition and evaluate per ISO 19095‑3 (e.g., tensile testing).
-
Reporting
- Test reports must reference ISO 19095‑6:2021 and include specimen identification, heating temperature, duration and operation date.
Applications and who uses it
- Primary users: materials and adhesives engineers, test laboratories, quality assurance teams in automotive, aerospace, electronics and industrial manufacturing where plastic‑to‑metal joints are used.
- Practical uses:
- Verify long‑term adhesion durability under combined heat and moisture.
- Screen material systems (polymer + metal + adhesive/surface treatment) for harsh‑environment suitability.
- Provide traceable, comparable degradation data to support design, qualification and failure‑analysis decisions.
Related standards
- ISO 19095‑1 (conditioning), ISO 19095‑2 (specimen preparation) and ISO 19095‑3 (evaluation methods) - used together to prepare, age and evaluate plastic‑metal adhesion performance.
