ISO 19202-1:2017 specifies the safety requirements for planning of track, design and calculation, manufacturing, erection, testing and commissioning of summer toboggan runs and their components according to Clause 3. Those are sports facilities with an inclined guided downhill track, on which the user passes a difference in height by user's dependent speed control, to a limited velocity and descending by gravity. Its basic approach is the consciousness that the sledding usually implies for the users a remaining risk, which is comparable with sports activities, e.g. bicycle riding, alpine skiing, rope courses, because a) active independent actions without supervision are necessary on tracks in order to control descents (distance control and braking), and b) posture and balance to ensure the balance between centrifugal and gravitational force are required. ISO 19202-1:2017 is applicable to summer toboggan runs and major modification to summer toboggan runs and toboggans manufactured after the effective date of publication.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19202-1:2017 - Summer toboggan runs: Part 1: Safety requirements and test methods - defines safety, design and testing principles for summer toboggan runs and their components. The standard covers the full lifecycle: planning of the track, design and structural calculation, manufacturing, erection, testing, commissioning and documentation. It applies to new builds and major modifications, and to toboggans manufactured after its publication date. The scope recognises the inherent, sports-comparable risks (user-controlled speed/braking, posture and balance) and frames requirements accordingly.
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 19202-1 organizes safety and technical content across practical areas, including:
- Materials and manufacturing: material selection, corrosion and surface protection, welded joints, and preventing loosening of connections.
- Toboggan design: requirements for rail-guided and tub-guided sleds, braking systems and user controls.
- Track design and structural calculations: structural design on site, rail/tub calculation, supporting structures, and brake calculations.
- Safety zones and visibility: requirements for braking distances, sight lines, entrance and exit areas, and clearance zones for downhill and uphill travel.
- Uphill transport systems: design of drives, tensioning devices, conveyance and connection points.
- Electrical and control systems: safe electrical systems and control logic for operation and emergency functions.
- Verification and analysis: actions, permanent/variable/accidental loads, impact and vibration analysis, strength and fatigue verification, and stability (overturning/sliding).
- Testing, inspection and commissioning: initial acceptance tests, functional checks, periodic inspections, post‑modification verification and test reporting.
- Marking and documentation: marking requirements, construction drawings, structural calculations, risk assessments and operating manuals.
Practical applications
ISO 19202-1 is used to:
- Guide safe design and manufacture of new summer toboggan runs and toboggans.
- Define acceptance testing and commissioning checklists for operators and installers.
- Support structural engineers with calculation requirements and load cases.
- Inform maintenance programs and periodic safety inspections.
- Provide a regulatory or conformity basis for safety officers, certifiers and insurers.
Who should use this standard
- Designers and structural engineers
- Manufacturers of toboggans and track components
- Facility owners and operators of recreational sports facilities
- Installation contractors and commissioning teams
- Safety inspectors, certifiers and regulatory authorities
- Maintenance and operations personnel
