ISO 19240:2017 specifies requirements for design, dimensions, material, fabrication and production testing of lined metal quarter turns valves (plug valves, butterfly valves, ball valves) and check valves with flanged, wafer and wafer lug body types. It covers valves of the nominal sizes, DN: - 15, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 65, 80, 100, 125, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500, 600, 700, 750, 800, 900, 1 000, 1 200; corresponding to nominal pipe sizes, NPS 1/2 to NPS 48, and applies to pressure designations: - PN 10, 16, 25, 40; - Class 150, 300.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19240:2017 - Industrial valves - Lined metal quarter turn and check valves for chemical process and related industries - defines design, dimensional, material, fabrication and production testing requirements for lined metal quarter-turn valves (plug, butterfly, ball) and check valves used in corrosive and chemical process applications. The standard covers flanged, wafer and wafer-lug body types for nominal sizes DN 15–1200 (NPS 1/2–48) and pressure designations PN 10, 16, 25, 40 and Class 150, 300.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Valve types covered: Lined metal plug, butterfly, ball (quarter-turn) valves and check valves.
- Sizes & ratings: DN 15 to DN 1200 (NPS 1/2 to NPS 48); PN 10/16/25/40 and ASME Class 150/300.
- Materials & linings: Valve linings shall be fluoropolymer or polymer materials; lining thickness minimum 2.5 mm on all media-wetted surfaces and end flange sealing faces.
- Liner anchoring: Liners must be mechanically anchored to body and closure elements to resist axial and radial flow forces.
- Pressure/temperature ratings: Assemblies must comply with pressure/temperature tables referenced to EN/ASME standards; limitations due to lining materials (e.g., fluoropolymers) must be marked.
- Design & construction details: Body wall thickness, shaft design (blow-out proof), continuation of shaft lining above primary shaft seal, face-to-face dimensions per ISO 5752, and flange compatibility with EN 1092 and ASME B16.x standards.
- Testing & inspection: Lining tests (visual, porosity, anti‑static), pressure testing (ISO 5208/EN 12266), allowable leakage rates, and additional examinations as required.
- Marking: PN-designated valves marked per ISO 5209; Class-designated valves per ASME B16.34. Required markings include differential pressure and any application restrictions.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 19240:2017 is intended for use in the chemical process and related industries where corrosion-resistant, lined metal valves are required. Typical users:
- Valve manufacturers and designers for product specification and compliance
- Plant engineers and piping designers selecting lined valves for corrosive services
- Procurement and specification writers creating tender documents and datasheets
- Quality, inspection and testing teams verifying production testing and marking
- EPC contractors and maintenance teams in chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, water treatment and related facilities
Related standards
Key referenced standards for dimensions, testing and ratings:
- ISO 5752 (face-to-face dimensions)
- ISO 5208 (pressure testing of metallic valves)
- ISO 5209 (marking)
- EN 1092 series (flanges)
- EN 12516 series / ASME B16.34 (pressure/temperature and shell strength)
- EN 12266 (testing procedures)
ISO 19240:2017 provides a practical framework for specifying, manufacturing and testing lined metal quarter-turn and check valves to ensure compatibility, safety and performance in corrosive process environments.
