This document specifies a test method to measure the contact angle for the determination of the surface free energy of a solid surface. The method can be applied for the characterization of substrates and coatings. NOTE 1 For the determination of the surface free energy of polymers and coatings, it is preferred to use either the method according to Owens, Wendt, Rabel and Kaelble or the method according to Wu. NOTE 2 The morphological and chemical homogeneity have an influence on the measuring results. The procedures indicated in this document are based on the state-of-the-art employing the drop projection method in penumbral shadow. Other methods are not excluded. Measuring the contact angle on powders is not part of this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19403-2:2024 is an internationally recognized standard developed by ISO that specifies a method for determining the surface free energy of solid surfaces by measuring the contact angle. This standard is particularly relevant in the fields of paints, varnishes, coatings, and polymers, enabling precise characterization of substrate and coating wettability. By defining robust procedures for measuring contact angles, ISO 19403-2 helps ensure accurate surface analysis essential for predicting adhesion, coating uniformity, and surface treatment efficacy.
The procedures in this document predominantly employ the drop projection method in penumbral shadow for contact angle determination. The standard provides guidance for both static and dynamic measurement methods, paying close attention to factors such as sample conditioning, test liquids, apparatus setup, and the influence of morphological and chemical homogeneity. Measurement of contact angles on powders is explicitly excluded from its scope.
Key Topics
- Surface Free Energy Measurement: Defines comprehensive steps for determining surface free energy of solid surfaces via contact angle measurement.
- Contact Angle Methods: Details both static and dynamic methods for measuring contact angles, including sample preparation and environmental controls.
- Test Liquids Selection: Offers recommendations on appropriate test liquids such as water, di-iodomethane, and glycerol, with an emphasis on purity, compatibility, and differing polar/dispersive properties.
- Calculation Models: Recommends evaluation models like Owens-Wendt-Rabel-Kaelble (OWRK) and Wu methods for surface free energy calculations.
- Precision and Repeatability: Outlines repeatability and reproducibility considerations to ensure measurement consistency across laboratories.
- Reporting Requirements: Specifies the essential elements that must be included in the test report for transparency and traceability.
Applications
ISO 19403-2:2024 has wide-ranging applications in industries where surface wettability, adhesion, and coating performance are critical:
- Paints and Coatings: Supports quality control and formulation development by enabling assessment of how well coatings will adhere to various substrates.
- Polymers and Plastics: Used to analyze surface treatment effectiveness, such as corona discharge or plasma treatment, by tracking changes in surface energy.
- Surface Science and Material Testing: Facilitates scientific research and product development through consistent measurement of contact angles and surface properties.
- Quality Assurance: Standardizes surface free energy testing in manufacturing environments for improved product reliability and process optimization.
- Automotive, Electronics, and Packaging: Ensures coatings perform as intended and surfaces are suitable for further processing or assembly.
