ISO 19496-2:2017 establishes a system for the cataloguing of defects in sheet steel enamelling. It serves for a consistent language use concerning the designation and characterization of enamelling defects. This document is limited to detectable defects and does not purport to fully take into consideration all occurring types of defects. It does not evaluate enamelling defects; the classification carried out serves for the conveyance of practical knowledge.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19496-2:2017 - Vitreous and porcelain enamels - Terminology - Part 2: Visual representations and descriptions establishes a common system for cataloguing detectable defects in sheet steel enamelling. The standard provides a consistent vocabulary and visual descriptions to help communicate the designation and characterization of enamelling defects. It is limited to defects that can be detected visually and is intended to convey practical knowledge rather than to evaluate or grade defects.
Key topics
- Systematic defect cataloguing: a structured approach to name and describe observable defects in vitreous and porcelain enamel layers on sheet steel.
- Visual representations and descriptions: clear definitions and illustrative references for defect types to enable consistent recognition.
- Scope limitations: applies only to detectable defects; it does not provide defect evaluation or accept/reject criteria.
- Defect taxonomy: includes detailed entries for common defects such as:
- Chipping (spalling, pop-offs, peeling, delamination) - detachment exposing substrate; causes include excessive stress or poor adhesion.
- Lines - e.g., hairlines (strain/tension lines), bubble lines (pearl lines), watermarks (shorelines/water streaks), and linear cracks.
- Surface irregularities - lumps (bumps, pimples), dimples, blisters, spots/specks, pinholes, ripples.
- Process-related failures - crawling, copperheads/burn-offs, fish scales, poor adherence and cracks.
- Causes and origins: for many defect types the standard lists typical origins (e.g., firing reactions, substrate contamination, uneven heating, incorrect slip consistency, mechanical or thermal stress).
Practical applications
- Quality assurance and visual inspection protocols for sheet steel enamelling processes.
- Standardized terminology for troubleshooting production issues (identifying likely causes such as poor adhesion, contamination or firing problems).
- Supplier and manufacturing communication - ensuring all stakeholders use the same defect definitions when documenting non-conformities.
- Training materials for coating inspectors and production personnel to improve defect recognition and corrective action.
Who should use this standard
- Enamel coating manufacturers and converters
- Quality and inspection engineers in enamelling operations
- Product designers and material specifiers involved with enameled sheet steel
- Procurement and supplier quality professionals
- Technical trainers and R&D teams working on vitreous/porcelain enamel systems
