This document specifies a method for the determination of in-plane shear strength of continuous fibre-reinforced ceramic composites at elevated temperature in air or inert atmosphere by the asymmetric four-point bending test on double-edge notched specimens. The shear strength in plane (1,2) can be evaluated, where direction 1 is that of the greater fraction of reinforcement and direction 2 is perpendicular to direction 1. Methods for test piece fabrication, testing modes and rates (load or displacement rate), data collection and reporting procedures are addressed. This document applies to all ceramic matrix composites with continuous fibre-reinforcement: unidirectional (1D), bidirectional (2D) and tridirectional (xD, with 2 x ≤ 3). This document is for material development, material comparison, quality assurance, characterization, reliability and design data generation.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19587:2021 specifies a standardized method to determine the in‑plane shear strength of continuous fibre‑reinforced ceramic matrix composites (fine/advanced ceramics) at elevated temperature in air or inert atmospheres. The method uses an asymmetric four‑point bending test on double‑edge notched flat specimens so that shear failure between the notches governs fracture. ISO 19587:2021 supports consistent material characterization for development, comparison, quality assurance and design data generation.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Applies to continuous fibre‑reinforced composites - unidirectional (1D), bidirectional (2D) and tridirectional (xD, 2 < x ≤ 3).
- Test principle: Determination of shear strength in plane (1,2) (direction 1 = dominant reinforcement) by asymmetric four‑point bending of notched specimens.
- Specimen preparation: Guidance on test piece geometry, V‑notch placement and machining considerations; emphasizes that fabrication history and machining damage can affect results.
- Test environment: Elevated temperature testing in air or inert atmosphere; sensitivity to environment (e.g., slow‑crack‑growth in humid air) and the need to monitor/report temperature and water partial pressure when relevant.
- Test modes and rates: Procedures for using load or displacement control, recommended rates to minimize environmental effects or to replicate service conditions.
- Apparatus and instrumentation: Requirements for testing machines, asymmetric four‑point loading fixtures, heating systems, thermocouples (temperature measured at gauge center), data acquisition and dimensional measurement.
- Data handling and reporting: Calculation of shear strength from shear failure force and gauge section, test validity criteria, reporting format for reproducible results.
Applications and Users
ISO 19587:2021 is designed for:
- Materials scientists and composite engineers characterizing mechanical behavior of ceramic composites.
- Test laboratories performing elevated‑temperature mechanical tests.
- R&D teams doing material development and benchmarking.
- Quality assurance and certification groups requiring standardized test data for components in high‑temperature applications.
- Industries using advanced ceramics (aerospace, energy, automotive, industrial turbines, heat‑resistant components) that need reliable shear strength and design data.
Practical benefits include reproducible shear strength data for material selection, lifetime and reliability assessments, and input to structural design or finite‑element models.
