ISO 19630:2017 specifies the conditions for the determination of tensile properties of single filaments of ceramic fibre such as tensile strength, Young modulus and fracture strain. The method applies to continuous ceramic filaments taken from tows, yarns, braids and knittings, which have strain to fracture less than or equal to 5 %. The method does not apply to carbon fibres that exhibit nonlinear stress-strain curve. The method does not apply to checking the homogeneity of strength properties of fibres, nor to assessing the effects of volume under stress. Statistical aspects of filament failure are not included.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19630:2017 - Fine ceramics (advanced ceramics, advanced technical ceramics) - Methods of test for reinforcements - Determination of tensile properties of filaments at ambient temperature describes a standardized laboratory method to measure the tensile properties of single ceramic filaments at ambient temperature. The standard defines how to obtain tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and fracture strain for continuous ceramic filaments taken from tows, yarns, braids and knittings, for filaments with strain-to-fracture ≤ 5 %. It excludes carbon fibres with nonlinear stress–strain behaviour and does not cover statistical strength homogeneity or volumetric stress effects.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & applicability: Continuous ceramic filaments; ambient temperature testing; strain to fracture ≤ 5 %; excludes certain carbon fibres.
- Specimen dimensions: Typical gauge lengths: 25 mm (main test), 10 mm and 50 mm (for load-train compliance); gauge-length tolerance ±1 mm.
- Number of specimens: Minimum 20 specimens per elementary unit for strength testing; plus three additional tests at 10 mm and 50 mm to determine load-train compliance when strain-related properties are required.
- Apparatus & accuracy: Force-measuring system conforming to ISO 7500-1 (grade 1); cross-head/displacement measurement accuracy better than 1 µm; appropriate grips to prevent slippage; adhesive (epoxy resin or sealing wax) or mounting tabs recommended.
- Test procedure: Constant displacement rate chosen to produce rupture within ~1 minute; record force vs. cross-head displacement (digital data recording recommended); careful specimen preparation to avoid handling damage.
- Calculations & validity: Tensile strength σm = Fm / A0 (maximum force divided by initial cross-section area); uncertainty estimate Δσ/σ = ΔF/F + ΔA/A; load-train compliance determined from tests at multiple gauge lengths; invalidation criteria include slippage, missing test conditions, or fracture strain > 5 %.
Applications and users
ISO 19630:2017 is used by:
- Materials testing laboratories and third‑party test houses
- R&D teams in advanced ceramics and ceramic composite development
- Quality control in manufacturing of ceramic fibres, reinforcements and composite preforms
- Industries relying on ceramic reinforcements - aerospace, automotive, energy, defense, and high‑temperature engineering - for material selection and validation
Benefits include repeatable, comparable tensile data for filaments, reliable modulus and strength values for design and quality assurance, and a standardized basis for supplier/product specification.
