This document specifies requirements for shipboard data servers that are used to collect data from other shipboard machinery and systems, and to further share the collected data in a safe and efficient manner. This document specifies communication protocols with reference to the data structure of ISO 19848. This document is intended for users and developers of shipboard data servers, as well as users and developers of systems that record data on, or retrieve data from, shipboard data servers.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19847:2024 - Ships and marine technology - Shipboard data servers for sharing field data at sea - specifies functional, environmental, security and communication requirements for shipboard data servers used to collect, store and share data from shipboard machinery and systems. Intended for developers and users of shipboard data servers and for systems that record or retrieve data from them, the standard defines how data is managed and exchanged at sea with reference to the data structure of ISO 19848.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard covers comprehensive technical requirements, including:
- Core server functions
- Processing performance, storage, interfaces, condition monitoring
- Data backup, restoration and status reporting
- Communication protocols
- Normative protocols for request–response, streaming, and file transport (HTTP(S)) (see Annexes C–E)
- JSON output and additional query parameters for flexible data access
- Data management
- System clock, Data Channel List, Data Source Information, Alias List
- Alias function, internal data calculation functions, and log management
- Operational security
- Protection from logical threats: access control, usage control, network access and system defence
- Protection from physical threats: installation, cabling, power management and removable device interfaces
- Software maintenance: update procedures, failure recovery and versioning
- Environmental and installation requirements
- Power-supply resilience, vibration resistance, electromagnetic immunity/emission limits, temperature and humidity tolerance
- Network and network-security installation guidance
- Testing and compliance
- Test requirements and a tabular arrangement of test objectives, conditions, methods and criteria (Clause 8)
- Informative guidance for ship-to-shore communication and user management (Annexes A, G)
Practical applications and who uses it
ISO 19847:2024 is practical for:
- Ship operators and fleet managers implementing onboard data collection and sharing
- System integrators, OEMs and maritime IT vendors developing shipboard data servers or client systems
- Naval architects and shipyards specifying onboard data infrastructure
- Marine maintenance and engineering teams using field data for condition monitoring, remote diagnostics, predictive maintenance and compliance reporting
Typical applications include real-time streaming of engine and sensor data, structured file transfers to shore, shipboard analytics and secure ship-to-shore data exchange.
